Now, I'm sure some of you will spot the similarity of the title of this thread to that of another thread that is active at the moment. It's intentional, in that I'm trying to evoke concepts of that sort in creating this thread.
So, Sony fans, why do you hate Nintendo so much? Microsoft fans, why do you hate Sony so much? Nintendo fans, why do you hate Microsoft so much? And the same questions in reverse. EA fans, why do you hate Activision so much, etc, etc?
This thread isn't actually about that, per se. I mean, it's about those questions, but from a bit of a different perspective.
Why do any of you hate any of them?
Let me be clear - this thread is NOT about the social dynamics, or the psychology of it, or anything like that. It's about the people who read the thread. It's about introspection, and asking yourself, why do you actually HATE any of them, in that regard?
There's being critical of one of them. You can feel that, for instance, Nintendo doesn't take enough consideration into third parties when designing their hardware. That's fine. But then there's serious dislike, or desire to see them fail. The Schadenfreude. Why do you want to see any of them fail completely, or even partially?
Suppose that you live in one country. There's another country next to yours. Do you actively hope that the country falls into civil war, because it'll somehow prove that your country is better? I doubt that you would. So why hope for a gaming company to fail?
Let me be clear - I'm all for bad business practices failing. That's a different issue. You can actively hate a specific thing that a company is doing. But why hate the company? I don't think any of them could truly be said to be in any way forcing anything upon anyone here, or anybody else around the world.
This thread is about asking yourself these questions, and seriously thinking about whether or not you suffer from this problem. Don't just brush it off, it's easy to miss this attitude in yourself. If there's any doubt, ask yourself this - if you were in opposite positions with someone else, would you consider what you were thinking or saying to be a problem? If you are a Nintendo gamer, and think about the Vita and go "good, the 3DS is better", ask yourself this - "If the 3DS were the one that was struggling, would I happily admit that the 3DS is the worse system?" I think the answer may surprise you.
