Do you honestly think that new IPs that no one has ever heard of will attract more attention than a new Mario Kart or Smash Bros.?  If so, explain to me why you think that this is true.

Because that's what we've seen time and time again. The media relies on new games, something that people haven't seen before. Mario Kart, 3D Mario etc. are all expected and nobody will be surprised when they announce it (heck, they've announced them already - where's the attention?). When there's something new, you will have to read about it/watch videos to find out what it is and if it's a good or great new game, then you can be sure the hype will go through the roof because of exactly this.

Something new?  Like PSASBR or Mod Nation Racers?  Sorry, but I had to go there because there is a point.  Mario Kart and Smash Bros. obviously are a very big deal to gamers or Sony wouldn't have tried to make their own version of them.  Sony fans and the gaming media got very excited about new IPs that resemble what Nintendo has done, didn't they?  Do I have to bring up Little Big Planet?

I understand that with new games come hype, but that does not mean that they make as much money as the established franchises.  Do you expect a brand new Sony IP to be as hyped as the sure to be upcoming Uncharted or Grand Theft Auto for that matter?  I don't.  Is a new IP going to outsell Call Of Duty?  No, it isn't.  I understand that many core gamers go crazy over a new IP, but the established franchises are the ones that get the most sales.  Why?  Because the established franchises like Zelda are what excites the gamer.  The gaming media is what gets excited for new IPs.  And as I said above, sometimes new IPs try to be like old IPs.

lol @ "it won't attract as much attention as the next gen".

1) Wii U IS next gen.
2) About people being interested: Mario 3D, Mario Kart, Smash, Wind Waker HD and, probably, something about the new Zelda >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything Sony could show for PS4.

I'm sorry, but do expected games really attract much attention? Answer: No. What next-gen is always about, and what gets people excited is all the new things we'll see. New IPs, new tech, new features etc. As far as new IPs go, Sony always has them in spades. That's the reason it will attract more attention.

To be fair Sony are good* at hype in shows like E3... its delivering and the follow through they lack on.

* depending on your defintion of good.

I'm not disagreeing with this, but I'm pretty sure that they'll hype up the latest Uncharted (if one is coming out) more than their new stuff.  MS does this with Halo and Nintendo also does this with Mario.  The big three know where their bread is buttered.

Yes, MS and Nintendo better watch. Sony the Big Boss is coming with PS4 and they won't stand a chance.

You can fool yourself with your never-ending love for Sony, Turkish, but don't try to fool us.
If PS4 really is about to be shown, then yeah, the hype is going to be through the roof. But by the end of the month all would have quieted down.

MS will be prepared to stand up against PS4 and Wii U come this E3. They know their competition is going to come out swinging.

As for Nintendo, with Smash Bros, Mario Kart, 3D Mario, X, Retro's game and more to show this E3, they're going to be fine at E3.

I'm expecting a really good showing from all 3. No-one will lose and we gamers will win because this E3 is going to be AWESOME!!!

totally agree.

Back on topic, I also think that as E3 is in the US and the 360 dominates the US now that the hype surrounding any new xbox launch will be enormous.

Yes, the announcement of a new XBox would be massive.

Also, to answer the original post about how Nintendo and Microsoft should be afraid, I simply don't think that's true.  All three need to worry about themselves at this stage in the game.  Nintendo needs to mend some recent problems, Microsoft needs to grow once more this generation like they did last, and Sony needs to try to reestablish the image that they had with the PS and PS2.

Yeah I can totally see PS4 being bad news for the Wii U like the Vita was to the 3DS! :P

For Wii U, there possibly can be a problem. Feb 20th unveiling can bring in the favors. Much will be based on the nature of content, games and hardware unveiling. Well for Nextbox the only way in which one can account for is about the hardware strength. Much hype has been revolving around better configuration among the two as rumors. I simply at this point refuse to accept that factor going against the Nextbox. The announcement/launch news would be as big as PS4's , if not better. MS could use  "PS: see the Future"as a reference point to study their competitor's pros and cons.

Difference being that the Wii U isn't really burning the shelves right now...

Also, as the PS2 has eloquently illustrated, just because you were sales king during a gen doesn't guaranty that you'll remain king the gen after.

Wii U may end up selling like the Cube in comparison to its competitors.

Not saying it will, but at this point in time, and considering the shaky state of the industry right now, everything is in the air.

There is only one winner and that is Turkish. He opened this tread and hide in a corner to enjoy the flame war among gamers. He is the winner.

Back to OP, I am really expecting to see what Sony will unvail for PS4. I will buy PS4 and nextXBOX definately. I already had my Wii U since day 1. The next (current?) generation will be my last generation. After it finishs, I think I will be 40 year old.

Why you ask? The announcement will steal both Wiius and Nextbox' thunder away. Its 1st of february and the whole gaming community is talking about the PS4. After PS Meeting showing off the console and gameplay videos of PS4 games, people will go crazy! The PS4 will be the big talk, it will have massive hype leading up to E3. Whatever Nintendo was gonna announce at that show, it won't attract as much attention as the next gen. Microsoft better announce the Nextbox on their own event before the E3, I know they had a countdown but announcing it at that show is too late, it will have to compete with both further PS4 unveilings and new WiiU games, not getting as much coverage as it would on its own standalone event.
