Means would be some sort of qualifier but I still don't agree with giving dumb people money just because they are poor. A scholarship represents a investment in my opinion and investing in a bad stock is a bad idea.

Racist.

I believe that to a certain extent, everyone is prone to racism, for in certain (extreme) situations he would at least slightly favor people from his own race.

Like prejudice and other habits that are nowadays considered bad but which everyone has, racism may have increased our chances of surviving in the stone ages, while in modern luxury times it has become a burden.

Everyone is not equal but everyone deserves to be given the same opportunities. Nothing more, nothing less.

Deserves the same opportunities in what way?  Does that mean when an opportunity pops up, that there should be a lottery where everyone is drafted into that lottery and the winner is given the opportunity?  Don't people, who are offering opportunities, for reasons of needing things done, make discernment decisions on who they feel is the most qualified to succeed in the opportunity, for the benefit of the agenda of the person offering it?  Also, isn't there a reality basis also that opportunities end up not being put out there for just anyone, but other criterion and limits of a person's network?

"Deserve" is a dangerous word, because it ends up having people making presumptions of entitlement that aren't there.  It is often a reach for things that are seen as not correct, without being able to articulate why.

i think giving everybody having the same oppertunities is something illogical and pretty much impossible. there are so many variables its impossible. but everybody should have the same rights

Expressed racism, even hate speech or incitement to violence, is OK. But people are free to judge you for it.

Hate speech laws are bullshit, but in no way should incitement to violence be tolerated.

I agree, though, that the best way to stop discrimination is to stop discriminating. Affirmative action is just HURR DURR ITS GUD WIN WE DUZ IT CUZ GUD ENTINCHINZ.

My contribution to this thread would be something like this. People of minority get more scholarship opportunities than white males... makes no sense. It should be determined by sheer intelligence... because someone is black they get to pay less for school. Stupidest shit I've heard. When I was filing out scholarship applications at my school I came across one that said you have to be black and less than 3.0GPA... so we are rewarding people for being dumb

the fact that the people giving the scholorship decided to include race in the matter is racist. they are discriminating against students who are not black.

I agree. about half the scholarships (probablly about 100 total are availble) had a race as a qualification. They were either "gotta be black" "gotta be mexican" which were the biggest chunk of them. One was "gotta be greek" and another chunk was "gotta be minority." The rest were based on academics.

Keep in mind this is a public school offering these scholarships too. It they were from a private company who wanted these qualifications I would be fine with it.

If they really want to help disadvantaged people, they should do it on the basis of means.

now your discriminating against the poor because they dont have the same means of edjucation to recieve high grades. even if lets say that that a poor kid and rich kid are going to the same school, the rich kid is getting higher grades. who should recieve the scholorship? definatly the poor kid. the rich kid has the money to recieve an edjucation, the poor kid doesnt. this way you have two people getting edjucated instead of one

That is just a silly argument. Poor people (like myself) can get straight A's... what you said is just completely inaccurate. My income last year was 12,000 dollars which is poverty standing.

i didnt understand your horse metaphore could you further explain it?

and of course not everybody can do the same things. people are in different situations. and as you said some people can do stuff in without breaking a sweat while others cant do the same thing in their entire life, its all circumstantial. and its impossibile to detrmine a humans worth. i actually find it wrong to say how much someone is worth, i edited my post and i explained that before you qouted me.

Well, about the horses you mentioned people are born equal - because they have reasoning, one would assume - and should be judged by that and what they accomplish in their lifes. However, much like a horse race, that doesn't simply happen. Jockeys of similar skills can spend the same ammount of time training their horses, however when it comes to the actual race, the breed of the horse will factor in and turn out to be possibly the most important factor. The same goes for our lives in my point of view... even out the conscious effort and likely you are left with what we are born with to decide. And that determines who we are in our ruthless society.

Anyways I think you would expect most of this with the divergence point being other here... most likely we would give a different answer to the following question. Is it better to be born good or to overcome evil nature through great effort?

Now we are straying more or less off topic, because racism would be a tentative of generalization of positive or negative traits  over an ethnic group. Assuming the strong influence of these traits in our lives like I mentioned above. And that's... another matter entirely.
