Forums - Gaming - Game Changer Idea For Nintendo: Wii U + Steambox

Right now we know Nintendo is getting very little support from Western developers. No Crysis 3, no BioShock 2, no GTAV, etc. etc. etc.

Lets change the equation. Partner with Valve who wants to get into the hardware business.

Keep the existing Wii U which by 2014 should be $250 or less for family audiences, people who only game once in a while.

But lets create 1 new box. One that has a 2014-era AMD PC GPGPU. And lets shrink the Wii U chip to the 28nm process and put that in the box too. One Blu-Ray drive.

There you go ... Steambox + Wii U hybrid. Nintendo and Valve work out a deal whereby Nintendo gets a slice licensing fee from the PC downloads. The controller is the Wii U tablet. Linux or custom OS w/Miiverse.

One box that can play Mario, Half-Life, Zelda, BioShock, Pokemon, Left 4 Dead, Donkey Kong Country, etc.

If the Wii U flounders as a game platform, I think they should look at integrating the chip (which is small and power efficient) into other devices. This could be one.

I doubt that a company that doesn't even want to put it's games on iOS/Android would ever do this.

Iwata is not doing any of that. He said he would resign if he gets pressured to put Nintendo products on mobile. So i don't see it happening.

sounds like a ridiculous idea to follow, WiiU is perfect as it is, it only needs sw
..... i wont miss any of those games you listed lol...

It would still be a Nintendo machine. Just a Nintendo-Steam hybrid console for the Western markets primarily.

Since Nintendo basically makes no money off the Western "hardcore" market, why not embrace PC devs and get some licensing fee revenue from these games that aren't showing up on the Wii U anyway.

Nintendo doesn't want to give any part of their company to another. Doing this would fail that idea.

Nintendo is far bigger than Valve. They wouldn't be "giving" any part of their company to anyone.

They would be tapping into a completely different audience though, one which they have very little standing with right now.

You say they should make a partnership, right? That would mean Valve would also work with Nintendo, meaning they could do things with Nintendo's brands and such. (I would imagine.)

It all depends on how they would make this partnership, though.
