Forums - Gaming - Surface Pro 64GB with 23GB of free space out of the box

What was bullshit people in here argued about HDD sizes, download speeds and compression tech again? Why the hell are me moving the wrong way when it comes to wasting space on storage space? Media files also take up many times the size in HD format, my Windows 7 takes up about 24 GB of the 55 GB total my system disc can hold.

Not sure if this is going to keep me from getting one or not.

Pretty awful if you ask me.

Don't you get office and other things for free though? 23gb for a tablet with pretty much everything you'll need installed?

Some tablets don't even have 23gb to start with..... Jeez.

Of course Windows 8 is bloated. It's two operating systems pretending to be one operating system.

holy shit... 40 plus GBs!!! Damn.

Even the desktop OS, AFAIK, doesn't use that much space. What the hell comes with that?

This should count as false advertising imo. Probably will in Europe in due time.

That would mean every single computer ever sold is 'false advertising', according to your definition. If I buy a PC with a 500GB hard drive you start off with about 465GB useable, about 25GB is already taken up by OS and bundled apps, and about 12-16GB is taken up by recovery and utility partitions. The only difference here is initial hard disk size. Space taken up by file system overhead, OS, apps, utility & recovery partitions is about 41GB. 64GB-41GB = 23GB. On a 500GB (465GB useable) the free space would be about 424GB free space out of the box... false advertising? Nope.

EDIT: Keep in mind, this most likely includes a trial of office 2013 Pro preinstalled.

I think it comes with preinstalled apps. Still shouldn't be advertised as a 64GB tablet if only 23GB are useable -_-

While this blows and I am not sure what they could possibly include on the device that is 40 GB in size, is this really that big of a deal?

I mean I saw 64 GB micro SD cards for 49.99...good ones too. USB drives too can be had for pretty cheap and can be found so small they are barely noticeable.

don't get me wrong... 128 GB model is a must in my opinion. But if I had a 64 gig model, my life wouldn't be ruined. Infact on my Surface RT I have like 20-something gigs free + 32 GB SD card and I am still very happy with the device.

GOOD GOD! Nobody knows about file system overhead, utility partitions, and recovery partitions? Up to 20GB of the total right there!

People who use "tablets" are not used to this I guess. I am pretty sure this will work on the Surface Pro and should free up and extra 5-10 GB of space.
