"It's done this with practically every feature on Xbox Live Gold. Netflix, Amazon Video, and (before retirement) social apps like Twitter and Facebook all require Gold subscriptions to use, despite these items being freely available on almost every electronic device on the market."
Is exactly why I don't like Xbox Live. Everyone talks how it is so much better than PSN but you are pretty much forced into paying for Gold to even enjoy your system at all. That is just wrong in my opinion. Especially holding you out from playing your games online. How can you take away the online from the game I just spent $60 on? I don't understand it. Why do people happily throw away money for Xbox Live?
PSN is great because I mainly only use my PS3 for games (online and offline). I don't really care for the PS+ and all the other chat stuff Live has. If I'm going to mic chat it will be with the people I'm playing with in the server, not some guy who is playing some other random game. Why would I want to talk to the guy playing AC3 while I play CoD multiplayer? I guess the only real thing that would make Xbox Live better would be that they get a demo for pretty much every game, but I can live without that. I know for the most part what I like and I can still find ways to try out the game if I'm not sure about it.
Gribble said: I think the case is just too compelling to argue against PS+. Even IF you call it a rental system (which in essence is true) that's less that £1 per game. Then there's the discounts, auto updates and online saves. This is an 'everyman's' article for me.
The discounts, auto updates, and online saves are every bit as important to me as the games, perhaps even moreso. I LOVE SO MUCH turning on my PS3 and seeing that EVERYTHING has been downloaded and patched up. The first time it happened I think I cried a little.
I also want to own up and say that I scoffed at PS+ at first. I thought it was going to be another half-baked idea from Sony that they would abandon after a year. I'm glad they proved me wrong.

pokoko said: Whoa, praise for Sony from Jim Sterling? My eyebrows honestly raised when I realized who wrote that piece. It's true, though. PS+ has kind of left Microsoft with egg on its face. They're going to have to change Gold going into next generation, especially if they want Xbox to be THE media hub in the living room. Gating video apps off behind Gold is just ludicrous. It would surprise me greatly if changes aren't made. I really, really hope PS+ continues next gen, and that it combines the Vita, the PS3, AND the PS4 in its subscription package. That would honestly be such a major incentive to buy a PS4 over the other consoles.
I highly doubt they would stop it at this point. They're bundling it with PS3 extensively now. I'm guessing PS4 premium package has a couple months bundled. Maybe you get classics via Gaikai if you have it or something. Their bringing it to Vita pretty much confirms this.
KHlover said: It really is a great service! However, I think it needs a free option where you only get to keep the games ~5 days instead of a month. Would drastically increase the spread of the service and might get more people to actually buy the games. I haven't bough a single game since I got PS+, one month is simply more than enough time to finish these games.
Wait what? You get to keep the games for as long as your subscribed not just for a month. Just add the games tou your downloadlist and your good for howeverlong you have plus.
And you can even take a break from plus and subscribe later again and the games become available again (or so i've been toled, havent actually tried that myself since ps+ is to good to let the subscription run out).

Oh, never noticed it. I always deleted the old games to make place for the new ones when I had finished them.
one of the best 50€ ever spend.
Last week I found myself only playing games I got from ps plus.
and for the vita.. Yeah, I need a bigger memory card
Without PSN I doubt I would have ever bothered with online gaming. I still find it as a "meh" feature, but appreciate Sony lowering the bar for entry so can try it time to time.

Yeah its wrong to compare them cause PSN+ is in every way superior and customer friendly.
And of course they offer different thngs...PSN+ is offering a lot of value in terms of free stuff for the customer and better quality for services both share.
