What should Sony do with Team ICO?

I think the main issue presented in this thread is the fact that they haven't released a single game in 8 years. That is pathetic and laughable. Well no, it's not laughable, it's just sad. :(

yea, they probably overshot the PS3's and their own capabilities with their vision for the project, after all Team Ico never was known for good tech and they needed the best in the world to get the PS3 to do what they showed in Last Guardians trailers - releasing a subpar "sorry, we couldn't do better now" version probably is out of the question aswell, as that would've destroyed the good reputation of the studio (yea,you could argue that the long wait for a new game had the same effect)

Actually, I think the whole reason TLG's development ran into trouble is because of Sony limiting the team. Team Ico tends to be pretty ambitious, and in order to fully realize something of that scale on PS3 would cost a fortune. I have a feeling Sony may have cut off funds available to Team Ico early on and caused the project to come to a hault, I know something must have happened to make Ueda decide to quit.

You mean to say that Sony might have stifled the creative freedom of an internal developer?

I could be wrong but i think Rockstar is about 5-10 times bigger than Team ICO and have at least 5 times bigger budget. Besides, they already have the formula for a GTA game figured out, while every ICO game is extremely unique and artistic in it's own way.


I think you are right the GTA rockstar studio may be 5-10 times bigger and the budget also,but GTA is 10-20 time more complicated.

5-10time longer gameplay,20-30x huger areas,Shooting mechanics,driving,dozens of mini games,many cut scenes,tv shows,radio,rc copters,dozens of cars and bikes,jets,copter and the formula is growing(tennis,diving,billard,darts,golf)

its hard to figure out such a formula.

 

ico had a pretty limited gameplay-a stick,some climbing and hold the girls hand(nothing gta cant offer)

sotc had a pretty similar story and gameplay+bow and horse

the games had a excellent story and atmosphere,and very artistic-because of minimalism and passion for details

As the guardian trailer reminded me of ico i think they will use a similar formula,therefor i think 5 years should be the max to develop such a game.

I m pretty sure uedas vision is great,but to ruin a studio,waste millions,make people unemployed is a too big sacrificel for a mans vision.

I even don't care about this game,but Sony are the only to risks millions in such a special game(neither MS nor Nintendo do so though they have the money)Sony could have made 2 stupid AAA shooters(=success guaranted) for the same money in the same time but they didn't.They said :lets make something special.A triple A artistic game.

But if Ueda makes such a mess than we will never ever see such a game again because noone will dare to risk his money for things like that.That would be a huge loss for the alternative gamer.lets hope Guardian will be a huge success to make sony producing further high quality games beyond mainstream.Giving other great artists the chance to make wonderfull games(artist who are able to respect development budget/time and create wonderfull things)

Sony needs to hustle them up, or I'd even say take their medicine and just shut down Team ICO.

Sure they make high quality games that get reviews in the 90's, but they aren't good sellers. ICO and SOTC were critically acclaimed but sales flops. I guarantee Sony takes a loss on The Last Guardian. I'd be surprised if it sells a million.

Its really ridicilous, its almost a decade their last game came out. Last Guardien needed to come out 2 years ago and they should've been working on a PS4 game by now.


I'm pretty sure that everything could be the reason to redo the complete game-but not the AI.

The AI has nothing to do with graphics,textures,gameplay mechanics-you can keep them and just improve the AI.

 



It has taken way to long. It's only acceptibal if they decided to move the project to Ps4 and Sony gave them that extra time to really show it off. However ND managed to get Uncharted 1,2,3 and The Last Of Us out this gen and Uncharted is some of the best games ever made. I'm expecting a lot from Team ico with this

I don't think you have to worry about Sony going away from the norm.  They've invested in games like Heavy Rain (a game completely made of QTEs?  people thought that would never work and it's one of my favorites this gen), Sly 4 (never got over 2 million with other installments on larger userbase), Journey, Flower, Rain, Puppeteer (fully priced, 2d platformer?  no way MS would touch that with a 10 foot pole), Beyond (see Heavy Rain), and even LBP was kind of a risk (kiddy and 2d platformer reliant on community to garner interest which could have never gotten off the ground).  They are truly a gamers company and continue to show that through more than just saying it.  They invest in these types of games and even though I'm not into all of them I can appreciate them going away from the norm and doing something they don't have to.
