I think you are right the GTA rockstar studio may be 5-10 times bigger and the budget also,but GTA is 10-20 time more complicated.
5-10time longer gameplay,20-30x huger areas,Shooting mechanics,driving,dozens of mini games,many cut scenes,tv shows,radio,rc copters,dozens of cars and bikes,jets,copter and the formula is growing(tennis,diving,billard,darts,golf)
its hard to figure out such a formula.
ico had a pretty limited gameplay-a stick,some climbing and hold the girls hand(nothing gta cant offer)
sotc had a pretty similar story and gameplay+bow and horse
the games had a excellent story and atmosphere,and very artistic-because of minimalism and passion for details
As the guardian trailer reminded me of ico i think they will use a similar formula,therefor i think 5 years should be the max to develop such a game.
I m pretty sure uedas vision is great,but to ruin a studio,waste millions,make people unemployed is a too big sacrificel for a mans vision.
I even don't care about this game,but Sony are the only to risks millions in such a special game(neither MS nor Nintendo do so though they have the money)Sony could have made 2 stupid AAA shooters(=success guaranted) for the same money in the same time but they didn't.They said :lets make something special.A triple A artistic game.
But if Ueda makes such a mess than we will never ever see such a game again because noone will dare to risk his money for things like that.That would be a huge loss for the alternative gamer.lets hope Guardian will be a huge success to make sony producing further high quality games beyond mainstream.Giving other great artists the chance to make wonderfull games(artist who are able to respect development budget/time and create wonderfull things)
