There's nothing immature about it. Putting money into a hobby you live is normal.
Many men spend thousands, sometimes tens of thousands repairing building a car even though they have one already and the end result could have been obtained quicker and cheaper just buying it. They do it because they have/had fun building what they built.
Some more relatable examples:
Millions have probably spent more on their WoW/OtherMMO subscriptions over the years.
A number of gamers have probably spent thousands on Rockband DLC.
