Forums - Gaming - How Gears of War Changed gaming

I'd still have to say that the most influential game of of this generation was Wii Sports.
It created a whole new market for games to explore, and single-handedly propelled the Wii to top sales.

It pretty much started the other companies into creating Kinect, Move, and 3rd parties tried to cash in on the action.

"Gamers" may hate it, but you have to realize, Wii Sports turned around Nintendo's fortunes. The Gamecube had sold just 22 million units and was even outsold by the original XBOX. Yet Wii Sports revived Nintendo's fortunes in such a massive way both Sony and Microsoft began to want a piece of the motion control action.

People around the world were charmed by it's simplicity, this game may have just changed the world's image on videogames in general, not as a nerdy thing as a dude plays in his mom's basement, but as a new format of interactive media.

If we as gamers already knew the potental of video games and what they can do, this is the game that brought that to the masses in an accessable way. This game single-handedly expanded the video game industry, and redefined what a game could be.

After all, all you needed was the element of fun.

GEARS gets to much credit. didn't army of 2 come out first! doesn't matter, Vanquish cover is better and more accessible, being that you don't have to take your hands off certain buttons to do certain things.

i'm a bit skeptical of GEARS judgement, but GEARS has undoubtedly made its mark and and impact on this gen.

Army of two came out a year after gears.

i played amry of 2 first. did u play either?

Yeah I didnt like Army of Two.  It was rather mediocre.  It wasnt horrible, just not for me.

yea it was average, but i enjoyed it. Ao2 will never be more then an average franchise. i liked the 40th day, but the cartel(the new one) seems just as avrage.

I only played the first so i cant say anything about the others.  they must make profits seeing as they keep making them though :P lol

Gears influenced he first half of the gen, but Uncharted ultimately ran withe the show, Star Wars 1313, Tomb Raider, InFamous, and other more successful looking games have taken a page out of its book.

Unfortunately for me, I don't like cover-based TPS games, so that influence kind of annoys me. I actually remember my friend loving Kill Switch, too, and me telling him that it was lame.

Pretty much this.

Maybe TLOU will set a new trend for AI branching over to next gen :P

2 must have done better then the first cause the first didn't crack 1m. it's more like 500k, maybe less.

Agree with the bold (particularly 2007 and '08). By 2009, games of the gen had come into their own, and the Gears cloning had slowed to a minimum. Uncharted has had a recent surge of similarly designed cinematics and character interactions, but I feel this has had minimal impact as well.

To carry the influence torch, in my eyes, you have to have made an impact like no other games before and continue to do so. Call of Duty and Wii Sports are about as impactful as we've seen all generation.

Star Wars 1313 comparison

The game ripped Uncharted just like the last Star Wars game ripped off God of War. I mean the animations are so similar. Its not a bad thing that Lucas Arts has a thing for Sony games directing and style.

Star Wars 1313 full cinematic style, cinematic to gameplay immersion, cliff hanger climbing gameplay (down to the animation).

Its the truth man, I dont want to go looking for the second half where they actually shoot and fight, because its blatantly obvious.

Wow, hadn't seen this before. The similarities are striking, even down to the way the Stars Wars character runs and jumps.

As a Star Wars fan and an Uncharted fan, I can only smile XD

Yep. The Tomb Raider devs even admitted they took from Uncharted, but they responded "they took from us", which is fair. Uncharted taught them how to revitalize their damn franchise completely though.
