Forums - PC - Sega “thrilled” to acquire Relic for “PC online game market”

Sega has issued a statement regarding its deep and abiding respect for the newly acquired Relic Entertainment, and seems comfortable keeping the team focused on its strengths.

Sega said it acquired all shares in Relic Entertainment and some IPs “in order to further reinforce PC game development capabilities” in the US and Europe.

Sega praises Relic’s production of “high quality games equipped with graphics equal in quality to movies and rich strategic game features”. While not going into specifics on IPs obtained, it made mention of Warhammer 40k Dawn of War’s 7 million series sales of 7 million and Company of Heroes’ 4 million series sales.

“We are thrilled to have Relic Entertainment join the SEGA family. The acquisition is a strategic fit and a critical step in growing our business,”Sega of America president and chief financial officer John Cheng said.

“They are a well-respected studio with a reputation for making creative and innovative games and we look forward to seeing what great things we can create together over the coming years.”

Relic joins Sega’s team of three existing studios on the US and Europe, which the company hopes “will further advance the provision of various appealing entertainment contents” and increase SEGA’s presence in the PC online game market”.

It’s not clear how Relic’s licensing agreement with Warhammer license holder Games Workshop will carry forward; Polygon reports the company said it would “work in good faith” with Sega.

I wonder if that "PC Online game Market" is just free 2 play or includes stuff like Steam (I know there are F2P games on Steam but you know what I mean)...

Sega needs more studios outside of Japan so this is a welcome addition to their studio lineup...

SEGA needs more Development in Japan as well. They only have 4 development teams that focus on console. They have the arcade teams too but they focus mainly on arcades. Of the 4 console teams one only does Sonic, the other Yakuza, the handheld team and sports team. Thats not enough. No wonder SOR, Vector Man ext are in limbo.

In regards to Relic, as long as they make money its cool. The big SEGA last year was the result of 80mill being lost by overseas. SEGA cannot be taking that kinda lost frequently.

Interesting... But IMHO its been a long time since SEGA released a worthwhile game. But to those PC gamers who enjoy SEGAs games this is a good sign

Long Live SHIO!

Good lord, Sega just added the mediocre Warhammer to their ranks. They should've just purchased Darksiders and called it a day. SMH

I suspect this move is more about the bottom line than game quality or potrntial.

like xxain said, hopefully they can be profitable in order to make some of the dozen awesome ips they have in their back catalogue.

More pc ports of Sega games would be really appreciated. Just finished Binary Domain and thought it was a solid game. Provides them with a steady stream of income over the years unlike console games getting most of their sales in first six months.

As long as there's no negative effect on Company of Heroes 2, I'm totally okay with this acquisition.

"The acquisition is a strategic fit" - I see what they did there

Did not know the Dawn of War franchise had sold 7 million :o. And Company of Heroes 4 million! Certainly nice sellers to add to SEGA's library to come.

It's not that impressive when you really think about it Dawn of War has what 7 releases in the franchise, Dawn of War plus 3 stand alone expansions and Dawn of War 2 plus two stand alone expansions. The games have all had several budget price rereleses (and GOTY edition type releases) and lots of 90% off Steam sales as well. 7 Million really isn't that many when you think about it.Same for Company of heroes with it's two expansions, tho the sales per game were higher than DoW they still lost money on the first game initially.

They are a successful developer for sure, but that is mainly because they release 1-2 games a year and have since 2002. Their business model has been to release a big game that loses money and then cash in on expansion packs.
