3. "Futureproofing"
Ivy Bridge is the last 1155 socket processor as we all know Haswell is coming. AM3+ platform on the other hand still has the Steamroller processors to look forward to which are coming sometime late 2013/early 2014. With Piledriver, AMD delivered 15-20% improvement over the Bulldozer CPU while lowering the power consumption as well. If Steamroller manages to do the same in a years time and keep the prices where they are, AMD will have sustained a very competitive AM3+ platform for 3 generations(more if you count AM3 CPU's which work on AM3+ motherboards as well).

What do you guys think? Is the AM3+ platform right now the better way for a 1000 dollar rrig like I see it, or am I missing something?

I believe AMD won't release anything more for the AM3 socket (not confirmed or denied). I think the non-APU Steamroller is dead.

I agree on your premise, but I still think it'd be worth spending the $100-200 extra to get an Intel setup. If you can't do that then OK.

I've read on a few blogs and sites that Steamroller will be AM3+ based while Excavator will be the new platform which adds things like PCIe 3.0 controller, DDR4 support, tripple channel memory and god knows what else. I know it's not official, but rumblings are that AM3+ will get another chip out from AMD.

I don't think so but we'll see.

AMD might not even survive to 2014 given the financials.

Someone needs to explain this mornings AMD's stock market performance to me... After last nights earnings, sense, this makes none.

They beat analyst's expectations. And they plan more layoffs which stock markets always like whether they make sense or not.

It's just that I see no area they could make progress in vs. Intel and return to profit. In 2014 they'll be selling 28nm chips against 14nm. Intel has caught up on graphics with Haswell+silicon interposer judging by the demo vs  a GT650M.

I've seen some pretty valid debates about that demo accusing intel of shady business. Something about limiting FPS to 30 on both rigs... After the revised ivy bridge TDP lie they tried to sell at CES, people were calling them out on everything.

Regardless though, I agree that AMD is trouble, but I don't think it's because of falling behind intel in the enthusiast market or even performance in general. Competing with Intel at 300+ dollar price points is not what would have saved them. Being competitive with laptops in terms of power consumption, and having a sound mobile strategy however...

True but the fact it could even get to 30fps is good enough. I mean obviously you never take tech demos seriously (remember the 3.0GHz original Phenom that according to the rep "wasn't cherry picked"? or the Fermi with wood screws?)

Falling behind Intel in die size and power consumption is the problem, yes.

Also, mobile strategy? They have one, Bobcat is really good. I don't understand the move to ARM, they just need to push Bobcat harder.
