Forums - Gaming - What is the difference between a JRPG and a WRPG?

jRPG - young emo boys with big swords and young retarted girls that are acting like 7yo are trying to save the world with the power of love, friendhip and other BS. tons of pointless animations with some lame dialogs like from 3rd world soap operas. add to that extremly boring battle system and you have a clear image of 95% of japanese rpgs.

IT'S A TRAP!

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

Obviously, not ever game fits neatly into one box or another, but there are some patterns to look at.

WRPGS- In general, WRPGS place an emphasis on freedom. They tend to be more sandbox style, and they tend to give you more freedom to define your character, often using a blank slate type of main character. Because of this, stories often are less intricate and characters are often more shallow.

JRPGS- In general, JRPGS place an emphasis on storytelling. Plots are usually more nuanced and intricate, and characters are more rounded. The player has limited input in how the story evolves and changes and is simply there for the ride.

In essence, WRPGS say "Hey wanna make up a story?" JRPGS say "Hey I'm gonna tell you a story.

WRPGS- In terms of gameplay, WRPGS usually use a kitchen sink type of approach. They offer a lot of different modes of gameplay, and a lot of customization. Again, variety comes at the expense of depth.

JRPGS- In terms of gameplay, JRPGS are generally focused. There are only a few types of activities to engage in, but what's there is usually well polished. Depth comes at the expense of variety.

WRPGS are usually jacks of all trades. JRPGS are masters of one.

Those I think are the two major differences. Of course the themes and stories they tell are also going to be different.

It literally is the developer, JRPG's are made by Japanese developers and WRPG's are made by western Developers such as European or American companies .... how do you guys really not know this, I mean its in the Flippin Name. Sure there are notable differences in the actual games but that is tailored to the own Specific Developer.

tl;dr
the name is based on where the game comes from.

WRPG: Has well fed people who cant make a decision for themselves (Clothing, which path to take, what gun/sword to use, who to screw).
JRPG: The other has starved girls with bulimia nervosa who constantly have to have dramatic pauses before a battle and tear while having a linear rollercoaster story that makes you feel like you never really made your mark on it its progression. For some reason they always wait for their opponents to hit them before hitting back. Its like an epic slap fight. Lesbian stories are big in them too, there was once a girl named Cloud who loved Aeries.  :)

JRPG's would make great spanish telenovelas.

Most jrpg:s have annoying art style, bad voice acting, ridiculous stories and uninteresting "character development" and most of them require no skill whatsoever. Just click some attacks from menu and grind for a while, you are set.
Sometimes those characters make me want to quit the game, like the "go on and on and on" girl from xenoblade or the little "I won't give up" twerp from Blue dragon. Gahh, me hate.

Wrpg:s have better art style (as in it does not make my eyes bleed), better stories and voice acting.

Of course there are always exceptions, like Lost odyssey on 360. That was a jrpg which I would like to see more often.

Did you say JRPG's are easy? I love WRPG's to death but FFX itself was harder than all of the WRPG's I've ever played save for Diablo on the hardest settings. JRPG's are like a chess match, choose your character, create growth in the moveset  and outthink your opponent with your moveset.

The difference is spelled out in the name.
