Obviously, not ever game fits neatly into one box or another, but there are some patterns to look at.

WRPGS- In general, WRPGS place an emphasis on freedom. They tend to be more sandbox style, and they tend to give you more freedom to define your character, often using a blank slate type of main character. Because of this, stories often are less intricate and characters are often more shallow.

JRPGS- In general, JRPGS place an emphasis on storytelling. Plots are usually more nuanced and intricate, and characters are more rounded. The player has limited input in how the story evolves and changes and is simply there for the ride.

In essence, WRPGS say "Hey wanna make up a story?" JRPGS say "Hey I'm gonna tell you a story.

WRPGS- In terms of gameplay, WRPGS usually use a kitchen sink type of approach. They offer a lot of different modes of gameplay, and a lot of customization. Again, variety comes at the expense of depth.

JRPGS- In terms of gameplay, JRPGS are generally focused. There are only a few types of activities to engage in, but what's there is usually well polished. Depth comes at the expense of variety.

WRPGS are usually jacks of all trades. JRPGS are masters of one.

Those I think are the two major differences. Of course the themes and stories they tell are also going to be different.
