PS3 was surrounded by doom because of the amount of money it was set to lose. Kutaragi likely truly believed PS3 had disrupted MS by (eventully) being a cheap alternative to PC. When look back at the 80's with C64 and similar computers, there's really no reason seeing it from not happening.
There's another company that have been trying to have Sonys ass handed to them for the last decade or so, and with the introduction of tablets, Sonys road as a PC replacement closed. Whereas Ipod answered the challenge to Walkman, Ipad was made to challenge the PS3 (if you want to see where Apple is heading next, you should look what Sony does, however, Hirai is much more dangerous opponent for Apple than anyone at Sony before him).
