@Happydolphin:
Of course the competition is broader than just one company. With products designed to compete all of them, the features need to overlap every competitor.
It's quite possible the companies just happen to share the same goals, but the result is kind of the same.
And it's not thought as retaliation to Sony products, but as who's potentially giving them the hardest time.
Apple obviously want's to be in your livingroom, pocket, anything just as long as you keep purchasing the content from Itunes (or what the shop is called today). Sony just aswell has the goal of "to control your livingroom". What would it mean to Apple, if Playstation (insert a number here), were every homes multimedia hub, and you'd be buying the content via PSN - just like you've seen all the fanboys hyping in the internet to happen every time Sony has put up a new feature into PSN. What if you could connect your (Sony) mobile devices to PS3 and use the content on the go. Or if you could access the content on your PS3 via online, and consume it anywhere on your (Sony) mobile device. Sony could also have tons of exclusive content, due to it's game, music and film divisions. Next Spiderman could be aired on PSN the same day it's premiered in cinema - who else could do that.
When you look at things from the content perspective - like Apple does as a content-providing service-oriented company - not in a tech perpective, the world looks very different. The approach Apple has, is similar to Nintendo with Wii; different enough to not to compete directly (even if you'd have a competing console, you still could buy one to provide different experience) and cheaper to develope games for, to ensure profitability for the publishers (besides, stealing a game/publisher from a competitor, is always a double-win for you).
It's really not the games they'd be competing, but about who will provide the content for the next decade or two.
And as a side note; prior to Ipad release, I filled a survey which was conducted to find out Ipad's potential as a videogames console.
It only does everything, as there's an app for that.
