Forums - Nintendo - Wii U is now 1 month old and has sold 1.8 million units. How is it doing?

How has the Wii U performed so far?

It's doing spectacular! I'm blown away! 126 10.09%

It's doing really good, can't complain. 418 33.47%

It's doing good, not as ... 269 21.54%

Could have been better... 176 14.09%

It's doing poorly; Wii did much better! 127 10.17%

Still can't believe they... 133 10.65%

Total:1,249

As it should be selling more than its predecessor, it is doing bad at the moment and in following weeks it will be doing even worse.

You do realize it's quite normal for a previous generation console to continue to outsell the newer generation console for several months (even a year) after launch?

Of course you do.

How many consoles have launched in November and sold more than 2 million units before years end?

From my understanding, I think the only system to have sold more systems at launch than the Wii U is the Wii ...

I must disagree z101:

Pikmin 3: Will drive some systems but will not have a mario like effekt.
Monster Hunter: Big in Japan but not so in the rest of the world. Plus its a port from Monster Hunter 3.
Lego City Stories: New IP: Will it drive many systems or will only Wii U existing Wii u owenmers buy that game.
Aliens: Multiplat. You cant get it for X360 and pS3 plus its no system seller.
Rayman Legends: Greast game but not a big game.

The onyl game i can see selling some systems right now is Wii U Fit but how will this work with that fat controller?

I would say you have to look at it from a different perspective ...

Since before the Wii launched, Nintendo has been trying to only release information about upcomming games that are likely going to be released in the next 6 months; while there have been some cases where games have been delayed, it has been more common to have games (like Mario Kart Wii) get announced a handful of months before release.

These are probably not close to the biggest games that are being released for the Wii U in 2013, these are the big games that will be released in the first 9 months of the Wii U's life. As anyone who has watched console launches before knows, this is a time period associated with the "post-launch game drought" were few good games are released because the platform hasn't developed a userbase and it is outside of the holiday shopping season.

Obviously, some of these games will be delayed and some may not be great games, but the Wii U seems to have 6 to 18 strong titles releasing in their "drought" period; which is actually very good compared to most systems. I don't want to hype up any titles in particular but Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover, Rayman Legends, The Wonderful 101, Wii Fit U, Game & Wario and Bayonetta 2 are all strong titles being published by Nintendo and it is likely that Nintendo will add a Mario Kart, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, or Mario game (along with other series) to the line-up next year; and I think it is difficult to say that is a weak line-up that will sell poorly.

The third party support is more questionable, but I think it is likely that a large portion of third party HD console games released in the second half of next year will have a Wii U version.

I was out shopping tonight, went to three stores and I saw one basic. It's funny how Nintendo ships all the wii u consoles to areas where the haters live and doesn't ship enough to the areas where the nintendo fanboys live.

aint that the truth..

Do you realize that I was talking about sales from launch for both consoles?

So which console is the predecessor of wii u? It is the console to make comparisons. What is it?

I certainly disagree with Aliens Colonial Marines. It's going to be a system seller - it's going to be the definitive version in terms of eye candy and gameplay. And a Lego GTA should shift a few systems too. I've also seen a few people on a few forums saying that they're buying a Wii U because of Rayman Legends too.

They may not be huge system sellers individually but added together they should shift a few consoles.

Mind you, it's currently outselling the PS3 and 360 during their first month after launch so I'd say it's doing pretty well so far, so those titles you've listed should keep the momentum going reasonably well until E3.

Dont get me wrong i dont think The Wii U will be in danger of ending in a game cube like szenario because its more than likely that Mario kart Wii U, a new Super mario Game and a new zelda game will follow by christmas 2013 or 2014 but i dont see the Wii selling well the frirst half of the year with all the anouncened games it has right now ( of course nintendo can anounce future games that will convined people to byu a Wii U) but right now i dont think that games like Aliens Clolonial marines etc will have much of an impact. Yeah some people will buy a console for Rayman Legends and Bayonetta but this arent big titles that will drive a big amount of consoles compared to a Mario or Zelda game.

Its like me expecting that Sly 4 will drive many vitas. It will drive some but not as much as a God of war or Gran Turismo.
