Forums - Sales - When does a generation end?

Generations don't end/start abruptly, there is overlap.

To me a Generation ends, when the last 1st party exclusive is released for that generation, and the new generation begins when the replacement console is released, AND no more 1st party exclusives are in the works for previous generations. For for Nintendo, the 8th generation has started, since no more DS and Wii games are in development from Nintendo. However Sony and MS are still in the 7th generation, so right now we're in a 7/8th generation overlap, where Nintendo and Sony handhelds have clearly transitioned to the 8th gen, while HD consoles remain on the 7th gen, which is ending.

After The Last of Us and Gears of War: Judgement release, to me, the 7th generation will be over. While the 8th generation will be official to me, Sony and MS will still have yet to enter a console to compete. However the focus will have permanently switched to the 8th gen.

i can get with this, but i'm in doubt of when exclusives will no longer be available for PS3.

I think a better, more specific question would be "when can we refer to a generation as 'last-gen' and the new generation as 'current-gen'?" Now that, I believe, can be a pretty complex issue criteria-wise.

Sony usually don't release 1st party exclusives more then 1 year after a successor is released. PS1's last 1st party exclusive was Twisted Metal: Small Brawl which released only a few months after PS2 did in Americas. PS2's last 1st party exclusive was God of War 2 which released 5 months after the PS3, and I'm not sure if we will see anything after The Last of Us for PS3.

When everybody has moved on.

so the 6th gen. is still on! no wonder Sony fans keep talking about PS2. oh and since it was the last gen. SEGA had a console in. Sega fans will never let it die lol.

I ment the companies not the fans...People will always go back to play older consoles.

i know. i thought i'd poke some fun.

OP: PS2 breaks all the rules.

When Sony says so.

LMFAO!!!!

So...We're still in the 7th generation then since PS2 is still selling 2 million units or so? and the 6th Generation ended in 2005 when PS1 stopped selling right?

No, this was funny though, Sony owns.

I think that two generations can overlap. So like right now you have the 8th gen Wii U and the 7th gen 360/PS3 out at the same time. I think the 7th gen will end when both of those are replaced and focus shifts away from them.

A generation ends the first next gen system is released. Therefor the Wii U brought us into the 8th generation.

But that doesn't mean the the 8th generation is fully up to speed or that the 7th generation has winded down all the way.

We are in a transitional time period right now.

In which case, The Last of Us is a very fitting title. As for the other game with "The Last" in its title, I think it might simply move to PS4. Would explain a lot about why Sony is keeping a tight lid on it.

I think in that case you would start talking about 7th gen systems as "last gen" when a bulk of the tech is 8th gen. So lets say the PS4 launches autumn 2013 but the 720 launches spring 2014. I think then you could say that the 360 is "last gen" because then two of the big three consoles are 8th gen.

PS2: wasn't twisted metal black released after GOW2?

PS3: when does beyond 2 souls come out? i'm sure Agent is being re-tooled for PS4. hmmm maybe not. yea that deal with Rockstar for 3 exclusives is beyond dead am i right lol.

and then there's the last guardian, and the puppeteer. Media Molecule, Suckerpunch, and Guerrilla games are said to still be working on PS3 games.

OP: i'm with badgenome and superchunk. Sony rules all. Sony will tell us when all gen.'s end.
