Forums - Microsoft - What would make Xbox LIVE's $60 fee an unquestionable value?

One more time.  value =/= cost

if I adopt PSN and ditch live then its free, I save money, it cost me less.

However, none of my friends are there so it has no value to me.  I go back to LIVE and pay because I, PERSONALLY, get more value.

I'm not saying you or anyone shouldn't find value in Live, only that due to competitive services the line of compartive value is blurring. Not for everyone, especially those already invested in the service, but for new customers.

Value does not equal cost rather cost affects value. I'm sure you are familiar with the economics of utility and if so you should know that cost is a factor. Value and cost are not equal, but related on a slope, a slope that is not equal to all. But that slope is far different to someone who has been using Live for an extended period of time and someone who has not.

Just because PSN is free does not rule it out. If PSN was to cost a $1 a month, would it all the suddent be a contending service? The answer is no, whether it is free or not it is still a variable in determining value for the consumer. Live has an incetive to attract new customers and to retain current ones. While current customers are far less likely to leave Live for another service, new customers are not. In order to ensure the ongoing health of the Live service it needs to react to increases in value from their competitive services. Otherwise Live will appear far less valuable to new customers and potentially to existing customers.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

If Microsoft doesn't make Xbox Live free for the 720, I will have to switch over to the PS4 or maybe even the Wii. I'll just buy the cheapest Xbox 720 when Halo 5 comes out.

What's your Xbox tag ? You can PM it to me

Its on his sig lol

I hate Microsoft. They charge for everything, and by doing that, they are ruining the gaming franchise.

How so? Ms is making money, offering great games and a good online community.

Yeah, with releasing one of those two milking franchises each year, LOL.

I don't believe Microsoft will ever make online gaming free.  The cost of providing such services is just too much, especially with the redundant architecture that Microsoft has built up.

So the question is, what would Microsoft have to include in an annual subscription to make an Xbox LIVE Gold membership an unquestionable value?

  • Subscription to (1) premium service (Netflix, Hulu, etc)?
  • Unlimited Xbox LIVE Music streaming (Xbox Music Pass required for additional features)?
  • 10 Free Skype Minutes per month (requires Kinect)?
  • Free access to Xbox TV base service, including channel guide (Xbox TV premium service required for DVR functionality and access to premium channels)?
  • Available across all Xbox LIVE connected devices?

For me?  Microsoft needs to hire Jack Trenton of Sony to say "unquestionable value" the way he does with Playstation+, for it to sink in.

I am currently silver and don't really play online much at all, so I don't need it.  I would say adding more free to play games online with Gold would help.  Come up with an MMO thing that is worth it.

I shouldn't have to pay to use the online service of a console, If I don't want to pay for live then I only get half the game I pay for.

Then don't pay and buy your games for other consoles. It is that easy!

Thats extactly what i did do lol, Brought a used xbox for LO a couple of weeks ago and never took it online XD

Maybe if I started off playing live before psn Id be more willing to pay for online, but when your getting it free you just never ever wanna pay.

A couple years ago, it was truly worth it, but as we have competitor who offers basically the same thing for free, the value part has lessen greatly. The advantage Live had is gone.

None of your above sugestions OP.

Also i wanna add. Whaaaat? You have to pay to use skype on Xbox live?

There is only one thing i'd take with it. Free games and discounts on other titles, just like PSNplus. Anything less and its definitly not worth it.

Some people love live some people dont think its worth the money, ive said this before but if next gen requried a $40+ sub fee ill be sticking with the ps4. I've said that before (After my xbox360 got RROD i said i would never buy another microsoft console since they told me it was my fault and wanted a $150 to repair it. This was before they started fixing them free so i repaired myself until it wouldnt stop happening.Than last year around this time i broke down and bought another one for the kinect bundle for the kids.

Loll come on even today bare back PSN has nothing on xbl... it's like comparing a smartphone and a dumbphone.... and say why buy a 600 bucks phone when you can call text and surf internet on a dollar phone....

Like I always said I'll pay the 60bucks as long as it keeps the cheap Ass teenagers out of it.... I bet the one thinking it's too much are the same scrooges that use Wikipedia 200 times a week got their asses saved dozens of times in college to do papers at the last minute and never gave a dime to the Wikimedia foundation... the same thief that use freeware and free apps day in day out and never do a donation to the devs.... heck I bet they even go the extra miles to crack the ad supported version..... as long as it keeps those people off xbl I'll gladly pay 60bucks or more....

I think the point is really being missed with the mindless back and forth going on here
. Obviously if you ALREADY have live there is no point is saying what they need to do to justify paying for it, you already are! For me it would probably take something similar to ps plus.

It's kinda sad that most people are debating PSN vs XBL instead of actually answering the question like you have, Kratos.  We've had enough threads bashing the competition.  Anyway, you said it would be worth $60 a year for you if they offered discounts (they do already offer special offers for Gold members every month) and some free downloadable games.  I can get behind that idea.

Thank you for your feedback Zap! Its just getting annoying that certain users are basically dicks all the time and try to pass it off as being "witty" or somehow of higher intelligence than others. Most the ppl that have responded in this thread havent even answered the question at hand, they are too busy bitching about what someone else doesnt like or doesnt use.
