Forums - Nintendo - Wii U Hacked?

Mr Khan said:

I don't think the piracy would be as bad on Wii U. PSP's problem (especially early on before PSN really became established, of course, even after that because of the high cost of memory sticks) was that going legit was generally much more inconvenient than piracy, due to UMDs and such. With full digital-download support and full, non-proprietary memory options, it's easier to stay on the straight and narrow here.

Plus Nintendo's going to send the mandatory updates flying in thick and fast.

nah I think you give those who pirate games way too much credit. Most of such priacy has nothing to do with conveniences. I mean even then with things like region locking...there would be just as much incentives to do it on the wiiu ..maybe even more.

The biggest harm the worst case scenario can do is for the third party support. Wiiu is already having trouble gaining as support as it deserves but if piracy become an issue that would be even more reasons for 3rd parties to avoid the system

but yea right now It's way way too early to speculate either way

It's not like Nintendo doesn't know piracy and hacking are a thing. How, if true, did Nintendo think that making such a low security system wouldn't cause them problems? Or did they think that because the "unhackable" PS3 got hacked that trying to make an uncrackable system is pointless and it's easier to play cat and mouse throughout the generation knowing that the vast majority of console owners can't be bothered with that sort of running battle?

How long did it take until someone could play pirated games on the Wii ?

Don't know exactly, but it was less than a year...maybe less than 6 months.

At least I will finally know what GPU is inside Wii U.

According to Google or as close as I can find it says August of 2008 but it might be a late article.

I unfortunately have some friends that were able to pirated games when they purchase the console and that was less than a year after the Wii's launch.

At least that was the chip-mod which most were relunctant to do.  The Soft-mod came out much later and was as easy as s--- for anyone to do with little risk involved.    If they soft-mod WiiU right off the bat, that's big trouble.  Especially for 'core' games as those'll get pirated the most.

Yeah well I wouldnt bet on that because the last update for the Wii that actually had security patches was in 2010. Pretty much every game that came out after 2010 was pirated which is why you could say the lower than expected sales for games like Skyward Sword, Xenoblade, etc.

No, after 2010 Nintendo started putting out games with very vicious watchdog DRM on-disc that would lock the game up as soon as it detected any modifications, requiring a separate suite of software to keep them debugged on the pirates' side. Also worked against certain region-free efforts (like with Kirby Returns to Dreamland).

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Doesn't that just encourage people (with modded wiis) to get the pirated version instead?

Wii was easy as fuck to mod/hack. Did anyone expect this one to be unhackable?
