Forums - Gaming - games = console success

I've been saying it for years now, and the message still isn't being heard.

games sell consoles.

But more accurately, apps sell consoles.

Every new thread that pops up spreading doom and gloom and every failed prediction....it all stems from missing this key point.

You'll hear"oh but apparently not, hence (insert dumbass remark)". You'll hear "(insert dumbass example) is eating up the market".

These are completely unfounded ideas, displaying a clear lack of understanding for which we have a decade of historical data to analyze.

Case 1: the wii (killer app: wii sports, wii fit)

The wii had two major apps that helped it crush the comoetition. You can see for youself. The highs and lows of the system were driven by these two games and supported by the core gaming infrastructure.

Case 2: playstation 3:

the ps3 started its move upwards thanks to secondary functions like bluray, and had very strong core support. These games have created a library that keeps the console expanding, and services like netflix, wherein ps3 is the leader...this year has seen less core game support, edging the console southward a bit while reinforced by its secondary function users.

Case 3: the ds (killer app:brain age, sudoku, translation, pokemon)

ds is another hybrid console, subsisting off of a perceived versatility that provides new experiences and flexibility, while at the same time providing gor high selling core games for first party and a fresh way to play traditional core games likesmt, pokemon, andd like that trauma cenyer.

case 4: vita (killer app: none)

the vita has still not seen its killer app, but the rumors point towards expansion of core functions. This is one of the cases where flurbs will say "the vita HAS games and still doesn't sell. it's dead." Yes the vita has games...but it doesn't have the right games.

Case 5: wiiu (killer app: ?)

WiiU will continue to grow and to evolve and we just need to wait and see what happens. It's "seemingly" slow start is explained perfectly by its lack of killer app indivodual to the wii. Currently, a gamer or non-gamer type does not see the increased funvtionality that it needs to thrive.

I've been typing on my phone blind now for 10 minutes so i will sign off and let you deal with all the spelling errors.

thanks for reading.

You were typing blind for 10 minutes, and the OP is the finished result?

Someone give this man a medal.

On a side note, I agree with the points you made. Games are everything, and the Wii U (along with all other consoles) will live or die by what kind of gaming experiences are available.

The long and short of it is that wiiu and vita will be fine. I know it's hard to believebutjust to give an example, psp thrived, well, subsisted on the popularity of games like hatsune miku, and monster hunter. This is nota good way to run a console, and it's very clear just looking at the sales.

Even great games cannot keep a system selling because eventually all the gamers already have it. This is similar to kinects effect on 360. 360 does not really increase in sales anymore when a big game releases, as opposed to that game being released early in the lifetime. Right now, it's kinect and secondary functions, bolstered by the core, which keeps the system going strong.

lol yeah the screen glitched and everything was black lol.

Agreed.

I think word of mouth could make NintendoLand and/or MiiVerse that killer app for the masses. Of course the long setup and updates might be the anti-killer app. It shouldn't take two hours to get to the point where I can enjoy the system. Granted, I could have allowed the initial update to be downloaded in the back-ground... but without a warning that it will take over an hour, who's going to do that?

Given how fast Wii Sports and Wii Fit took off, that would already have happened.

You just contradicted yourself.

The "game sell consoles" argument is PRECISELY that blu-ray, "feel of versatility", online store/apps like TVii,  netflix, "secondary function" DON'T sell consoles.

You clearly believe that they do, so you are not part of the former. You're muddying the water.

no.. it's

japan=games!

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Lol this going to so off topic but.... Why did I read this in a girl voice in my head? I know the guy is a guy but some reason it feels like a girl/woman wrote this. Just weird.

On topic: I basically agree with everything. Good job.

That's so weird; I was just saying in another thread that Wii U will sell by word of mouth!

I'm not sure if Wii U has a killer app just yet - and that's a bad sign. Personally I love the touch screen, the Miiverse and TVii - but I haven't tried the system yet, so I basically love the IDEA of those functions.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
