Are you like the John Lucas equivalent of the Sony camp?

So, what did the john lucas predict? Was he the guy with 85% marketshare for wii or the guy who predicted wii outselling the entire playstation family?

Oh, the 85% guy was Sebastian Kramer.

Not sure about that, but I believe he predicted something like 250 million total sales for Wii. In all fairness, this was the golden era of Wii where the sales were on fire (07-08) but still absurd prediction even with that context.

With regards to topic:

Absoulte best case scenario for my money puts the PS3 at about 95 million units sold while Wii trickles to only around 103 million. Even for that to happen, A LOT has to go right for Sony and wrong for Nintendo. PS3's numbers have to hold up very well during its 7th,8th, and 9th years which history has shown is never the case. Even the PS2 started a pretty significant slide during those years. This also assumes no price drop for Wii, which obviously won't be the case. I think more realistically it will be PS3 - 90 million, and Wii - 105 million.

The other possible scenario is Sony riding out the PS3 for 4 or 5 more years without releasing the PS4 until 2015 or so. Then MAYBE PS3 could eventually catch Wii as Sony would not have the burden of a successor console cutting off its life like Nintendo currently does with Wii U. However, if Sony does go this route, they will all but concede next generation to Nintendo anyway, as the WiiU would hold a 25-30 million head start right out the gate when they finally release PS4. I don't think Sony would save their past just to sacrifice their future like that.

The fact that anyone still actually believes PS3 will outsell Wii at this point is laughably absurd and blows my mind.

It will surely sell beyond a 100 million, above that is anyone's guess. But i will be sure and revive this thread in a couple of years for some delicious crow eating for the ones, you know very well who you are, who don't want to belive or hope not that the PS3 can do this.

i've predicted 110-125m 2 yr's ago, but now i'm not so sure. PS3 would still have to outsell Wii and 360 with the new consoles coming out. and with likely no exclusives support in the following yr.'s.

it's a tough one old friend, but not out of reach.

Well, it looks like your HW prediction for 2012 will come true. That is if VGC is correct on the numbers. Personally, I think the max Sony can hope for is matching the PS1's sales (102M), which would still be great for such a rocky start. I definitely see it making 90M+. Either way, I hope you are proven right.

Didn't Sony announce that the PS1 had shipped 120m in it's lifetime?

OT: ~105m at best is my prediction.

No.  Official number is 102.5M.

I think your prediction is blown out of proportion. 90 million seems a lot more reasonable. 100 tops.

I do not think that 115 million for the PS3 is a very realistic prediction. I personally expect between 100 and 105. Also, LOL at anybody who believes that further price cuts will impact the Wii's sales in any significant way.

It is pretty crazy that the PS3 could end up within 5M-10M of the Wii.  Even after such huge years for the Wii and such a rocky start for the PS3.

@thismeintiel

Agreed, almost as impressive as the SNES overtaking the Genesis / Mega Drive in its twilight years.

Very possible. Most people here forget that sony sells millions in countries like India, Brazil, other parts of Asia etc. , where MS and ninty consoles just don't sell. Each of these areas contributed 1-2 million to total ps2 sales, and that was after its price dropped to 99$. I am sure ps3 will live till it reaches 99$. 115m is not far-fetched.

There is a lot more competition these days for sales as theres a still viable $99 Wii and Microsoft is making strides in developing markets like for instance Brazil where their console is selling better than the PS3 due to them building a factory down there.

Tease.
