It does seem strange. Is Warner HD DVD exclusive at the moment? If so, then maybe its a deal, Sony drop the price of PS3 to 300$ to get more Blu-Ray's in homes, in exchange Warner go Blu-Ray exclusive.  

 why not buy a PS2?

If Sony can drop their HW costs by $400 in one year, they will have no problems being profitable by the end of the year; even with a price drop.

Anyway, I doubt that this will come to anything, but you never know. Seriously, Sony has pretty much all the momentum right now (the Wii also has plenty, but its not really affecting PS3 sales), so why not give an extra push to take out the 360? I doubt it would touch the Wii, but it would pretty much doom the 360. I mean, once you hit $300, M$ could drop the 360 to $100 (never happening) and the PS3 would still be worth about the same or more ($100 360 console + $100wireless adapter+$50Xbox Live=$250, add a $120 future BD add-on and you're talking $370 and the PS3 STILL has 20GB more HDD space)

So yeah, I doubt this is anything more than a rumor, but its not impossible that it is true

See my post in the first page, the OP's link that say "100$ price drop for the 40gb" is just quoting some random post in a forum that were talking about local reduction or card gift or something like this.

What I mean is that nothing is clear when u look where come from the quotes talking about the price drop.

This is going to be crucial, if ps3 indeed is $299.99 by march or earlier, wii will no longer sell.

The ps3 sales would destroy wii and 360 sales.

This part is just plain false. Is there ANY announcement from Sony which says this? All I remember was some analysis from Citi Group about it, which didn't even have any hard numbers to justify its conclusion.

Wouldn't affect the Wii too much, but it would set up a blood bath as both Sony and MS countered with price cuts.  Wouldn't affect the Wii because PS3 has nothing to counter Wii fit.

Although this would make people wonder if the PS3 is in trouble since such huge price slashing can give the impression of desperation
