Forums - Sony - DOWN PERISCOPE: Sony to drop PS3 to 299$

@ leo.

...

I'm trying to break it to you as easy as I can. The Wii will continue to sell, even if they were giving away PS3s. It's all about software. And at this present point in time, there isn't anything to play on it, but in a year, that may be different, but it still would not change a thing. If it is 299, it'll bring sales up, but not sustain them above the Wii.

the receipt posted on the first page proves NOTHING. just thought i'd point that out.

as for a $299 ps3 on jan 28 i don't see it happening. however, JAN 28 would be a good date as many electronic stores (like best buy) have a 30 day price guarantee that would of expired for anyone who bought it during the holidays or on boxing day.

also, dell canada had a deal where you got a 40gb ps3 with a hdmi cable and ratchet & clank for $399. that in itself puts the price of the hardware around $339. an additional $40 off that dosen't sound too crazy, but the timing does.

if it indeed does happen on the 28th,I'd be shocked.

Financially, the price cut makes sense, consoles have historically been sold at a loss until the tail end of their lifetime. The only consoles not sold at a loss are the Sega Saturn(sold at the price to manufacture) and the Nintendo Wii(sold at a $100 profit for Nintendo). Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony make most of its money off of game licensing, not the actual console. For every game released, they developer must pay $10,000 worth of licensing fees to Sony(its traditionally been $20,000 for all 3 companies, but this was another cut Sony made to encourage developers recently). They also make a bulk of their profit from peripherals, like memory cards and controllers.

...

BTW, the bolded part is completely incorrect.

That is simply the cost of a devkit - and its only Sony that had such a ridiculous price on a PS3 devkit (Wii kits start from $2k).

BTW the bolded part is completely _correct_. You buy a devkit for 10k. Nice. Then you have to *publish* the game. You need Sony's permission, and you pay licensing fees to do so. This is Sony's cut of every PS3 game sold. That's how Sony gets paid for selling all those consoles at a loss! How do you think Sony recovers their HW losses? Magic? You play a flat fee upfront, plus a decling fee per unit sold. THis applies to anthing carrying the PS3 logo. Similar thign applies to using the Blu-Ray logo. You can't just start printing BD movies - you gotta pay the fees first!

Ninentdo is famous for being *very* militant about licensing fees. If you didn't pay Ninty to use the Nintendo 'gold seal' on your games, expect to find yourself in court. There were a number of 3rd party developers who tried to sell 'unlicensed' games for nintendo systems. Nintendo sued them all into the ground. Maybe, having lost the last two generations, Nintendo is nicer now. And maybe Sony, having won the last two generations is teh bad guy this round....

Licensing fees are built into the production fee/cost for units. Its no magic "$10k" fee for a product like that - so the numbers presented above are completely incorrect.

I haven't seen the latest figures on licensing fees for a while, but last I heard fees for the PS3 were significantly higher than either the Wii or the 360.

Nintendo has also (for a while) had a system where "budget" titles can get a cheaper production run, and pay a smaller licensing fee.

The comment above about "$20k for all three companies" is what I was specifically highlighting as completely incorrect.

...

Fact - developing a game for the PS3 is significantly more expensive than for the 360, and much more so again than for the Wii. This is part development cost, part devkit costs & part licensing fees.

so here's what i'm getting from this thread. we need to tell everyone NOT to buy a ps3 cause a price drop is coming soon. check.

***hey everyone....don't buy a ps3 yet. another price drop incoming. pass it on.***

1/ LO moved no hardware in Japan becuase LO is disapointing, will finish under 70k in Metacritic and will not move any Xbox360 unit in NA/PAL

2/ what makes me lol are not the Leo-j's posts but more the battle Leo-j/Soriku
they are so funny !

PlayStation 3 Price-Drop Again? Don't Hold Your Breath

There's a rumor that began circulating on the CheapAssGamer forum stating that the PlayStation 3 would be seeing a price-drop soon. Certain other members chimed in with their own "knowledge" and vouched for the rumor. The alleged details are a price-drop for the 40GB PlayStation 3 down to $299, which will occur on January 28th.

Now before you get all excited, do note that the chances of this being real are extremely thin. Seeing as how Sony only recently dropped the price of the PlayStation 3, I wouldn't expect them to do so again. Currently, Sony is selling the system at nearly no loss, as manufacturing costs of the unit have dropped dramatically. Additionally, the fire behind these rumors seems to have very little fuel. Generally, we'd have seen or heard indications of a price-drop from retailers, or retail employees. And thus far we've seen nothing.

That said, it's always fun to speculate. But come next Monday, January 28th, don't be surprised if nothing happens.

Well first of all that is his opinion so whatever he says is as reliable as a rumor.

When the PS3 came out they were already losing 200$ off each PS3.

I am not saying the price cut is for sure just that this also doesn't prove anything.

Like I said earlier, this could've been a stipulation in any deal Sony made with Warner, dropping the price of the ps3 yet again to spur adoption of Blu-Ray, and cause the standalone manufacturers to drop their prices to compete. This would explain both why Sony is dropping the price so soon after the launch of the 40gb, and also why no word has popped up from any retailers (the Warner decision was a last minute decision made on Jan. 3).

All that being said, I still think the chances of a price drop are slim to nil. I think the rumors of Sony paying Warner $400-500 mil. are more credible.

As I said on another thread, the US dollar is getting murdered. US money is worth 10% less than it was six months ago. So in effect, people who buy in the US today are paying 10% less than they were six months ago. That $399 system is really selling for $360 in 2007 US dollars.

I've contacted Sony for a response on the price cut.  I'll let you know about it if I hear something useful that isn't confidnetial.
