Forums - Gaming - Battlefront 3 was 99% completed says developer

We were THIS close to getting a third Battlefront game. Free Radical co-founder Steve Ellis said the game would have been a turning point for the company after falling into development trouble with Haze.

"We were making a game with very high ambition," Ellis said in an interview with Now Gamer. "You could start a battle on the ground, jump into a ship and fly into space, continuing on to dock in a capital ship and continue the battle there.

An early version of the game leaked this past April. An hour of additional footage leaked the following July .

"We'd had to build all kinds of new tech and overcome numerous technical challenges and limitations but we had done it. We had a 99% finished game that just needed bug fixing for release," he added.

"It should have been our most successful game, but it was cancelled for financial reasons. I'm happy that people did at least get to see what we were working on and share the team's enthusiasm for it."

Well this pisses me off even more, I so wanted the game!

They just keep rubbing it in.

I think someone else from Free Radical must've said this a while back because I remember reading it then too?

Was in half a mind about FR developing it since - in my opinion - Pandemic did such an incredible job with the original two - but any Battlefront is better than no Battlefront. And in this day and age of connected online play, too =/

Still heartbreaking in any case. Such a good series, still don't fully understand why they canned it (not the direction they wanted to take the Star Wars games or somesuch? Bullshit. Especially since they were still developing them for PSP at the time. And if the issue was financial - I mean come on - the game was almost finished, just get it out there and get some money back).

I thought battlefront games were more-or-less re-skinned Battlefield games? Why wouldn't it of just come out once BF3 was done?

They should have taken the Bethesda approach. Make the consumer the beta tester and fix the bugs later.

Couldn't they release it 99% completed like Bethesda do (more like 75% for them, but you get the point)?

You stole my thunder!  I did make a better joke though..

Bro, that's not even remotely close. You should definitely play something from the Battlefield and Battlefront franchises if you ever get the chance, though, they're both great franchises.

Disney should just be smart, acquire the source and assets if they still exist (likely) and contract a competent develop with Unreal Engine and multiplatform experience to update the game and release it for minimal cost in todays terms.

Yea, that sounds like a decent plan.  Just don't take the Duke Nukem Forever approach by building it, scratching it, building it, scratching it, then releasing something that can never live up to expectations due to taking longer than a Blizzard development cycle.
