I wouldn't mind being a news editor...the news section certainly does need help.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Perhaps you should offer incentives, like I don't know, profit sharing.  As much as people like to do things from time to time to help out their favourite sites, getting paid to do work, makes people work harder.

iOi,

I am also wondering if there is any certain incentive in this. I am a graphic designer and would like to help. My business site is http://www.subodesign.com and I also run some t-shirt websites at http://www.redpilldesigns.com and http://www.cafepress.com/filmfreak

Let me know of what assistance I can be.

See, look at that.  A designer who will work for money.  You can't expect things to be done for free, and if you do, you'll get subpar work.

Yeah, but that defeats the purpose of this work being done on the 'community' side. By registering with this website, you have joined a community - and, in any community, you're supposed to pitch-in and help out in anyway you can for no other reason than to benefit the whole. Do you think the mods here get paid anything? For that matter - do you think the mods over at sites like IGN or Gamespot get paid?!?!?

I'm managing my son's T-Ball team this year - I don't get paid squat to do it - but I'm helping my community by teaching other kids how to play baseball... ...and that's pretty much what ioi is asking for here. If you don't want to be involved, no harm - no foul. You shouldn't expect to get paid for it...

...besides - aspiring journalists or web programmers will, at the very least, have something to stick on their resume. :)

 Head of Marketting and Advertising.

Anywhere else, is a job, you get paid.

Head News Editor.

Journalists get paid.

Graphics Designer

You go to school for a degree, you normally get paid.

The rest are smaller things which anyone could do if they were explained on how to do it.  The point is, don't expect community work to be free.  I doubt you get over 1 million people watching your sons games a month.

The thing is, this place isn't a business. It's a hobby. ioi has mentioned that a lot of times. I doubt he makes any money off of it, and I assume the ad revenue all goes right back into server fees and maintaining the site.

To counter your examples, in any *company,* the position of "chairman" is a pay position, right? I mean, the guy's the chairman. But how many university student union chairmen do you think get paid? They provide their service because they believe in the cause of student support. Look at community theater. Actors don't get paid at all, and directors are generally paid only for other things they do within the organization, outside of directing. In fact, some community theaters expect actors to pay a small fee to the *theater* once they're cast. It all comes down to how much pride you have in what you do, and how willing you are to sacrifice for a goal you would like to see achieved.

For some people, that goal is as simple as re-instating wifi acess on campus.

For others, it's putting on a performance that every member of the community can have access to, young or old, rich or poor.

And for some people, the goal is creating a strong community of video game enthusiasts, built around market share statistics, where you can get hard facts, rumors and speculation, industry news, or just a group of people less obnoxious than the IGN forum members.

It all comes down to what you are passionate about, and if you need money to augment that passion, that may just mean you're not the kind of person ioi wants.

(how's that for a marketing application? :-p)

As for the 'graphics designer', well again - if they were looking for somebody with a degree and was interested in a paid job, there are much better avenues for finding those candidates rather than a post in a forum.

It doesn't matter how many people come to my son's games - it's still a time committment from me (and a BIG one at that!!) and I do it without pay...

True. But I think looking for someone within their own forums is not a bad place to start. At least you know those people are interested in the subject of the site.

Also, it doesn't have to be pay. What if it was a page with links to people that are helping. It can be more than just about the money.

ioi

How much, if any, do you an brosh make off this site a month? (I bet there will be no response from ioi on this because it'll prove my point)

I seriously doubt all of the money they make goes back to the site, because they'd have a much more reliable server.  What makes you think they can't be doing this monetary gain?  They can do both monetary gain, as well as offering the site for the video game community.

Considering server costs are maybe $50, doubtful they colocate, with 1m visitors a month, if not more now (ioi made a post about the increase in activity and it's exponential rates), I know from using adsense the average CTR is 2-3%.  That's 20K-30K clicks a month.  Average click is 5-20cents, you're looking at easily a grand if not 5 or 6.

It may not be any of my business, but you shouldn't expect things for free if you've got something with some serious potential, and vgcharts has some INSANELY HIGH potential.
