Forums - Sony - Convince me to buy a Vita

JayWood2010 said:

As you may or may not know I usually end up buying all the consoles each generation so it really isn't an if I buy the Vita but rather when I buy it.  Anyways with Persona 4 golden being released it does have me interested in buying it.  However I'm really not a JRPG type of guy other than pretty much just Pokemon.  No I don't really like Final Fantasy.  They aren't bad games, I just don't like them.  Anyways the vita honestly doesn't have anything else I'm even remotely interested in and on top of that they don't have anything in the forecast that interests me either.  Because of this I really can't justify spending $300+ for one of these things, so my vgchartz people, convince me to buy it, or should I just wait for a price drop.

BTW I really hate doom threads and comments so if you are just going to come in here and bash the vita you might as well just leave.

If you didn't buy it when it was sales for $200 or even lower just last week... then you should probably wait for next time they have such sales

Reasons to buy? Plenty... but it's pointless until you can absorb the cost of the hardware somehow to point where you can enjoy games on it

  • Base unit cost is high, but I think machine is well worth it
  • Proprietary Memory Card capacity is limited with max of 32GB and cost is superficially high ($100 MSRP for the 32GB)
  • PS+ instant game library has very good game selection
  • Really competant ports of PS3 games like Rayman Origins, Need for Speed - Most Wanted, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
  • PSN games that you buy once and can use on PS3 or PSV like Sound Shapes, Zen Pinball 2, Sina Mora, and bunch of others
  • Some notable exclusives like Uncharted - Golden Abyss, Tales from Space - Mutant Blob Attacks, Escape Plan, AC3-Liberation, Smart As, Gravity Rush, etc
  • Lots of shovelware to avoid like Resistance Burning Skies, Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified, poor DS/3DS ports like the Lego games.
  • Sony has strong track record of supporting their system long time and never giving up. PSP is still supported, they stuck with the PS3 and it best system for games on market right now, PSN is greatly evolved and still free, etc. They just this year finally stopped making PS2 and no more PS2 games I think since maybe last couple of years.

What types of games do you like?

This, this, and this.  In your OP you state you're not interested in any of the PS Vita offerings and you go into detail about why you don't like JRPG's, but you don't tell us what you actually do like.  It's hard to convince you of something if we don't know what kind of things you like playing.

If you say there aren't any games you want, then I do believe you, because that depends on the person.  Don't buy a console when there are no games you want on it.  But I feel there is a good representation of a number of genres on the console.

For me personally, I like a little big of everything and Vita seems good for this: platformers (LittleBigPlanet, Rayman Origins); racing games (WipEout 2048, Need for Speed: Most Wanted); action-adventure games (Gravity Rush; Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation); shooters (Uncharted: Golden Abyss; Unit 13).  The only genre I feel is under-represented for the time being is JRPG's, which is a big deal, but Persona 4 in March will do for now :)

The kicker for me was PSP compatibility.  I didn't own a PSP, so having a library-full of those games on PSN compatible with dual analogue and on the OLED screen convinced me of a sale.  I knew anything that I felt was missing (such as JRPG's) I could just fill with stuff from last gen.  Obviously, this wouldn't work for a person who owned a PSP.  But just a little food for thought.

edit: Oh and when Sony announced cross-buy of games I was already planning on buying (Ratchet & Clank; Sly Cooper; Playstation All-Stars), that was just another reason for me to buy.

Not buying PS+ with it would be a mistake for one, so if you're going to buy it make sure to get plus. I know you've said already that it isn't your thing, BUT almost all the big Vita games are already available on it and Mortal Kombat is coming for it in December too (at least in Europe, not sure how it is in USA).

Mortal Kombat will be a nice addition as I think it has been the best fighting game in years.  But no PS+ isn't my thing so I'd still pass on it, no offense or anything.

Well you clearly do not like good things or care about value for money, so go buy 10 Vitas.

Where did that come from?  Because I don't care for PS+ because I feel like I'm throwing money away for games I do not care about?

I think you would understand his rash statement better if you were on PS+. If you have PS3 and get PSV... it is quiet foolish to not get PS+. You are focusing on not owning the games permanently, but you are forgetting that all games, DLC, etc get 10-20% discount with PS+ so if you buy enough content digitally, then you will spend less money with PS+ than without. There are also tons of games with 1-hour trials so you don't have to rent games just to try them.

The value equation is heavily stacked in favor of getting PS+ than not... if you own a PS3 + PSV, or even just a PS3 by itself.

The main reason I got it was for the PS1 back catalogue. I wanted a bigger screen for playing the PS1 Classics than the PSP screen. And because I live in the EU I don't have access to many of the games that were not released in the EU, and were therefore not on the PS European stores.

This was an opportunity to create a US PSN account and buy the PS1 games that never came out in my region and play them on the handheld. I could've done it on the PSP or the PS3, but the Vita seemed like the perfect device for that. I'm not sure what to tell you if you do live in America and you have access to all those games anyway. But my primary goal was the PS1 Classics, and obviously games like Persona 4 (when it comes out) and other games.

Pretty much every kind of game excluding most JRPG's and RTS.  Every other genre I'm good with.

Exactly what I was about to say. You clearly aren't interested in the Vita's games and you don't like the price. There is no convincing possible. Besides, only you can know for shuts if the console is right for you. Do research.

Eh, I was hoping somebody knew some games coming out that I didn't know about.  I mean I wasn't aware of Persona 4 Golden either.  I usually just ignore JRPG games and I don't stay updated with the Vita all that much either because every article about the thing is it's doomed, and that just gets annoying.

Just wait and see. Don't invest into a system that may be dead in 2 years. If next year has a good lineup, and more devs seem to be on board/are still on board then buy it when the price is cut.

they did say a price cut is coming next year so you should wait for that
