Forums - Gaming - Did Nintendo Miss Their Opportunity By Undercooking the Wii U's Specs?

Can we wait an entire week before funeral services are held?

DaRev said:What we do know is that each console developer has its own brand of problems in releasing its next console.

For example, Sony wishes it had at least 3 more years to make some money on the PS3 before having to spend money on R&D on a new console. Plus Sony is almost broke. MS on the other hand knows the value of coming out ahead, and has learned not to underestimating Nintendo (Sony doesn't care about NIntendo IMO). And they both are watching the current economic climate - remember 3DS vs Vita price point and price drop and/or lack thereof?

Yes its difficult for Nintendo, but don't think Sony and MS are just going to have a cake-walk with their new consoles.

You said it perfectly. Since I am giving my two cents here I think microsoft is the one that is most likely to screw up. Sony is only in the worst position. But ironically, that will only make them all the more determined to turn this around. The reason I think microsoft is the one to fall the hardest next is the only mistake they really made with 360 was the failure rates. They got it all right for what the core market wants. The thing is there are holes in their tactics which isn't effecting them right now but could do next time. For one, they seem to push this huge reliance on shooters. Then they have tonnes of games they could use in front of them but they fail to do so.

One more thing to complete my year = senran kagura localization =D

On a internet forum? No such luck. Thing can die in a single day here.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

let me rephrase a bit.  nintendo probably came up with some sort of target price: $350.  with that buget in mind they had to make decisions about where to put that money.  into cpu?  into ram?  into the gamepad?  into some other sort of control input?

sony can probably get a way with releasing a purely game machine: just a cheap standard style controller.   nintendo probably couldn't.  they would be critized far more than MSony if they had a console without some sort of gimmick.  ..thus making the decisions about design (that have already been made) all the harder.

wiiU isn't a "leap" over ps360 in raw power.  but could they even afford to do that?  both a leap and a gamepad would have been a very expensive console.

this has nothing to do with it only being out a week.  sales performance isn't what i was trying to talk about.

Why would Sony get away with a standard controller but Nintendo wouldn't?  I don't know what you're trying to say here.  And you're saying Nintendo needs a gimmick or they'll be criticized?  That's very ironic.

I don't think it's a question of affordability, it's more a in-house philosophy of why even do it.

because move was a failure.  you honestly think nintendo could have launch a "traditional" console as a follow-up to the wii and not been slammed in the press and by the consumers that loved the wii for breaking away from the traditional?!?  if you think that you are being naive.  it's not ironic...it's market expectations.  nintendo has built themselves a reputation with the wii/ds and it is the sword they'll live or die on.

I think they've impaled themselves already on that sword with the return to dual analog.

People who bought Wii for Wii Sports / Wii Fit and/or Just Dance are not going to buy a WiiU when it forces them to use a controller option that they simply don't want to invest the hours it takes to get good with.

they can still use the wii motes can't they?

Nope.   Aside from Pikmin 3 and CoD:BO2 I don't know of any WiiU games that can be played with Wiimote/nunchuk only.

Heck, I'd have bought a WiiU if I could have played AC3, ME3, and Batman:AC with wiimote/nunchuk.  But that's me.  Most people want the next Wii Sports - which is currently Angry Birds.   Simple, fun, accessible gameplay.   WiiU is not accessible for non-gamers, tablets are.

and doesn't the wii U also have a tablet controller?

I think the true opportunity nintendo missed was undercooking the 3DS specs. If they had matched or exceeded the vita's specs they could have delivered true console gaming in the palm of your hand.

Nintendo is always two steps behind the competition while Sony is laughing all the way to the bank(rupt).

Not really.  It's single touch, it has no operating system, has no Apps, and doesn't travel outside of your home.   From that perspective it's worse than a Wikipad or some other such devices.    The WiiU isn't a true next-gen HD console, isn't a true tablet, isn't a true Wii successor (in that it didn't build on what Wii did) it's some compromise between the three and falls short on all counts.    It does have some great features and games all it's own, but it'll be a hard sell for Nintendo.
