The vita was probably more than likely a hit in the U.S this black friday.. as it's sold out almost everywhere(the COD/AC bundles)..... but, I do agree.. they need to cut the vita's price to $199 or less.. and I do believe they can afford it.. my opinion on the matter is that sony is making a tremendous profit per vita sold.. and are trying to keep the system highly priced in other to bring in profit into the company.. vita.. vita accessories.. ps3 software.. and ps3 accessories along with maybe their smartphone line up is what is probably keeping the ENTIRE company afloat.. as it's likely all of those things are bringing in a lot of profit in comparison to anything else that they sell.. |
I'm not sure if they earn money on a Vita they sell, but Vita gamers tend to buy games and accessories, so all in all the Vita business may be profitable day-to-day (not including the development costs obviously). Still I don't think that it's a big margin. Sony probably doesn't want to cut the price, cause they assume this won't cause the sales to suddenly erupt, so why waste money? If you're in such a bad financial situation as Sony, t's better to be making money selling less consoles, than losing money selling a bit more. That's how Nintendo survived the Gamecube era. It sold ridiculously bad, but was profitable non the less.
Sony wants to wait with the price cut until:
1) all people willing to pay the current price do so
2) the cost of the console drops (the cost of parts has to be lower now after a year since the debut, it will be even lower in 6 months, when E3 comes...)
3) until they release the second wave of good games and mayby finally get a System Seller (Soul Sacrifice hopefully?)
That would be the best possible moment for them. They have two priorities at the moment. It's not just getting as many Vitas out there as possible, but also to lose as little money as possible while doing it. They have to carefully calculate how much of a benefit will the cut give and do it at the right moment. I already bought mine, so I don't care about the price cut anymore, though I'd love it if they cut the price of the memory cards and released 64 and 128 GB versions.
At the moment Sony just hopes that X-mas time and the recent games (P4G, ACIII:L, CoD:D) will help them move a decent number of consoles and improve the general trend from just 40.000 consoles per week to something more respectable... This console has a lot of potential and they should focus on this, on getting exclusive games from 3rd parties and from their own studios before they cut the price.
Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!
My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/
My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.
