Forums - Gaming - Project GODUS - Peter Molyneux & 22 Cans' newest idea.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/22cans/project-godus

It’s an innovative reinvention of Populous, the original god game and delivers exciting global co-operation, competition, creation and destruction to a whole new generation..

The dream at 22cans is to make gaming meaningful. We want to engage people in fresh new ways with accessible, delightful games and experiences. We’re calling them experiments. Curiosity – what’s inside the cube was the first of these and we’re taking what we’ve learnt from it and applying it to future projects such as our next step - GODUS

Populous was created over 22 years ago, and we believe that to date, nothing has come close to emulating its powerfully godlike experience. It’s this experience we aim to reimagine. GODUS blends the power, growth and scope of Populous with the detailed construction and multiplayer excitement of Dungeon Keeper and the intuitive interface and technical innovation of Black & White. The original Populous hailed from the 8-bit era but GODUSwill use the most modern technology the world has to offer.

And you can help us make it!

Hadn't seen this posted already, give me a shout if it has been and I'll request a lock of this thread.

I still love Molyneux, but I find him such a confusing mess since about Black & White 2 onwards. I was under the impression he set up 22 Cans to try out new and exciting things, then their second project ended up being Populous reborn. That's fine, but why not just say "We're making 22 Cans to revisit old Bullfrog IP's" right from the start.

As an old Populous fan I am excited about this, but then he went and blabbed about wanting to add multiplayer and I cringed. That's never what god games were about to me, ever. I don't see any way, shape or form it could be added and keep the feel of solitary enjoyment I get from playing SimCity or Populous.

As a side note, is this going to be his final game? After the release of Curiosity he said he was only going to make one more game:

http://beefjack.com/news/peter-molyneux-im-only-going-to-make-one-more-game/

I know he's full of hot air, but still.

The veterans all return to their roots. David Braben, Chris Roberts, Jane Jensen, The guys who created Space Quest, the couple which created Quest For Glory,...now Molyneux.

My prediction - the next ones will be:
- Richard Garriott (needs money, first step: tries to sell his famous house in Austin http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/8207-Two-Coves-Dr_Austin_TX_78730_M80342-14958 )
- Will Wright

While I like Populous and god-games I think this campaign is annoying. It's just free marketing. No doubt these guys would be able to invest much more than a measly £450K for a new PC game.

They are an independent studio, yes, and those have a right to be on Kickstarter, but it feels cynical when they launch a campaign with a highly professional pitch video but nothing substantial about the game itself.

I don't like Molyneux anymore after all his years of lies.

"It’s an innovative reinvention of Populous, the original god game and delivers exciting global co-operation, competition, creation and destruction to a whole new generation.."

So feeding this into the Molyneux to English translator, it's probably some sort of rail shooter.

I love Populous, and Black and White, and I really do want this to be good, but for god's sake, his latest game is about picking at a giant cube. I worry that he ran out of ideas around a decade ago.

Yep, Molyneux is without a doubt a millionaire.

Something I'd very much like to see.

Something I'd very much like to see.

Me too.

BTW: small game developers like this gentleman http://twitter.com/jpickford/status/267973660860633088 (his company: http://www.zee-3.com/ ) are making fun of millionaire Molyneux, who already asked for money ten days ago, but not for his Populous resurrection, but to °battle server issues" with his iPad game "Curiosity"  http://www.vg247.com/2012/11/12/curiosity-molyneux-asks-for-donations-to-battle-server-issues-pc-version-in-doubt/ .

And Mr. M. wonders why people don't take him seriously anymore. Or probably he doesn't wonder as he never cared.

I'm pretty sure a return of Will Wright with new or old ideas would be widely welcomed though. People always liked him.

He was crying about something lately and I think it was this game hmm....let me find it;.

Quote:
In an extraordinary interview to be published shortly, a clearly emotional Peter Molyneux broke down into tears when discussing the struggles he’s had with Curiosity, and his concerns about making promises for Kickstarter GODUS.

I can’t blame people for not believing,” Molyneux responded, when it was suggested that his history of over-promising and under-delivering might hurt prospects for GODUS. Especially in light of the very negative reaction to Curiosity’s server failures – something the creator tells us was “a disaster”.

I know I’ve said things,” Molyneux continued. “I wish I could not say them, I guess. I just… I still believe so much.”

The developer, unquestionably exhausted after a very difficult two weeks with Curiosity, was clearly in an introspective and moving mood when we spoke to him.
Quote:
“I swore that when we started 22 Cans that we wouldn’t over-promise, and I guess through stupid mistakes we have. I have to live by those. If it means that the project doesn’t get Kickstarted, if it means that people use the Kickstarter to vent their frustrations, then I guess I have to live by that.”

and a final weird quote:

Quote:
“I think I will be doing games until the day I die. I can’t see that, at this rate, the way I’m burning through my life… I don’t see that I’ll be alive much longer.”
