Forums - Nintendo - IGN: Expect numerous AAA announcements by 3rd parties in 2008

First generation pokemon games were good, the second they introduced the 151st pokemon was introduced, the series got sucked into pop culture and has never emerged since.

I have my doubts about the 3rd party AAA titles though, why would a developer spend heaps of money making a AAA title game when they could just make a crappy game and slap "splinter cell" "MGS" "Resident Evil" "Kingdom Hearts" on it instead, considering that of the three AAA titles on the Wii at the moment (Zelda, SMG, MP3) only 2/3 sold well.

EDIT: Monster Hunter is not a AAA title, it's a mediocre hack and slash, like how dynasty warriors get's around high 60's every year, doesn't make them good games, only reason Monster hunter remains in the 70's is because it's slightly less generic AND it doesn't come out every year. End o' story

It seems like the majority of this argument is based more on what makes an AAA title than anything else ... which is something we're probably not going to be able to find common ground on.

I think most people will agree that between January and June of 2007 most third party publishers were fairly willing to green light larger-budget original games for the Wii (for release between July and December of 2008) than we have seen so far; 12 to 24 months of development with a $8 to $12 Million budget would represent the Wii version of a lot of the major third party games that were released over the last 6 months. These games may or may not fall into your definition of AAA, but they will likely have a large budget and marketing campaign in comparison to most Wii games that have been released.

As for CAL4M1TY's question about why a developer would make a game like this instead of simpler games ... In order to manage risk publishers choose to spread their resources across several platforms and several genres; if they focused on a limited set of genres on the Wii they increase their risk of losing a lot of money.

Now I'm really confused....Didn't Phatt Matt just throw a massive fit, claiming no publishers would touch AAA games for Wii? Seriously, why is this guy still working.

If your thinking of the same column I'm thinking of, he pitched a fit about mature titles not selling on Wii, not3rd party titles.

Yeah, i guess Zelda games and FFI-XII are not epic since they don't feature FFXIII-like graphics.

I expect at least five third party big budget wii games to be announced this year( I mean a game costing about 9 million to 13 million to make) and all of the to stay un announced till E3.

Re: Matt C. changing his tune on 3rd party support.

I'm not sure he is really. Previously he was complaining that 3rd parties weren't willing to put mature and core games on Wii. That may still be the case. The AAA titles that are coming may be stuff with a lot of mainstream appeal already like RockBand, Kingdom Hearts 3, and other or new IPs aimed at the wider market.
