Forums - PC - Direct X 11.1 is Windows 8 exclusive, no plans to retrofit

VG247

Windows 8 is to receive Direct X 11.1 exclusively, with no plans to make it available for older versions of Microsoft’s OS. In response to the company’s position, a Microsoft employee has discussed the move on its official forum.

Neowin reports that Microsoft employee Daniel Moth took to the Microsoft Answers forum to discuss the move, where he said, “DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista …. but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7.”

When Neowin asked for more details it was met by a Microsoft rep’s response, “We have nothing further to share.”

PCGamesN has added that while the move seems to lock out owners of older Windows operating systems, Direct X 11.1 doesn’t add that many features to get green-eyed about – unless you’re a fan of stereoscopic 3D.

The update will allow stereoscopic 3D to be viewed with compatible glasses, among other features. here’s a full update list:

  • Shader tracing and compiler enhancements
  • Direct3D device sharing
  • Check support of new Direct3D 11.1 features and formats
  • Use HLSL minimum precision
  • Specify user clip planes in HLSL on feature level 9 and higher
  • Create larger constant buffers than a shader can access
  • Use logical operations in a render target
  • Force the sample count to create a rasterizer state
  • Process video resources with shaders
  • Extended support for shared Texture2D resources
  • Change subresources with new copy options
  • Discard resources and resource views
  • Support a larger number of UAVs
  • Bind a subrange of a constant buffer to a shader
  • Retrieve the subrange of a constant buffer that is bound to a shader
  • Clear all or part of a resource view
  • Map SRVs of dynamic buffers with NO_OVERWRITE
  • Use UAVs at every pipeline stage
  • Extended support for WARP devices
  • Use Direct3D in Session 0 processes

Desperation.

They want to break into the tablet and phone market so badly that they're forcing consumers into adopting the Metro interface that comes with Windows 8.

Not surprised here really.

I usually don't respond to gifs but that was a nice punch through.  I would never attempt that unless my monitor was completely busted.

OT: It would be nice if they supported their olders OS like they used to.  Now it seems they will try and make their older OS outdated quicker to try and get people to migrate.

Unless your monitor is glued or screwed to the table you won't be able to do that. You will damage it, but you won't go through it.

OT: And who cares? Given the massive support that DX 10.1 had (almost non existant), that won't be a problem for anyone.

Besides, the trick to make users upgrade because of a new DX will no longer work as games are still build with consoles in mind and therefore most games are still DX 9. Only a few also have a DX 10/11 option and I don't even know if those games make full use of those capabilities.

Please excuse my bad English.

Windows 8 is a piece of crap for anything except tablets.

They'll go back on this, mark my words.

Not a problem for me as i can't wait to get windows 8.

Didn't Microsoft make DirectX 10 Windows Vista exclusive, and then (almost) make Direct X 11 Windows 7 exclusive?

Realistically Microsoft (and other companies) do these kinds of things because they're too busy giving users features they want them to have rather than providing users with features they desire. I haven't tried Windows 8 but I was surprised with Windows Vista and Windows 7 that they still didn't have a "App Store", a software white list, or a dozen other features that the #1 operating system should have; and if they implemented a bunch of these features I'm sure they would get the kind of adoption they were looking for without any "tricks".

that's sad, but ofcourse most people saw that move coming after they refused to release dx10 for XP

well, my next windows might be 9 or 10, if Valve doesn't decide someday that all new steam titles have to be linux compatible, in which case I'd go to linux

Unless you are strong and fast enough.
