Clue to No. 45: One of (if not the) first FPS to be released and marketed based almost solely on the strength of its online multiplayer.

MAG?

You're about a generation (possibly 2) late
Think PC!

Quake, or one of the Quakes?
Or Unreal Tournament

Yep!
45. Unreal Tournament (PC, also on DC and PS2)

This game was a revolution; the first game marketed as a pure online shooter. Fast paced action, multiple game modes, superb level design and a plethora of weaponry made this game sublime. Unreal Engine and Epic would never have been so big if it hadn't been for this game's success. I still remember sniping on Facing Worlds and getting my first "M-M-M-MONSTER KILL!" or the first time I played on the Zero-g level and how it was like entering The Matrix. Very cool!
