Hm, if I'm not terribly mistaken, isn't full Cell (with all 8 SPEs) rated at only 230 GFLOPS single-precision (which gives PS3's Cell with one 7 SPEs even less performance)? Compare that to estimation of rumoured A10-5700 + 7670 combo for PS4 which gives 1350 GFLOPS just from GPU elements, and I think you'll have your answer which path is better for next-gen. And just for fun, let's compare it to 7970 with 4000+ GFLOPS of single-presicion.... ;)



It was just that the GPU couldn't handle the cell.

I don't doubt that IBM was working on a 32nm die for the Cell processor.  I don't even doubt that they were working on a higher performance version of the Cell for future use, but I highly doubt either IBM or Sony would go from a stable processor in the current Cell processor to an unknown in in a Cell that utilizes performance gains and would in turn mess up the operation and function of every old game.

I didn't say Sony will use Cell again... I just corrected you because the Cell never was cancelled... only the version with 32 SPEs was cancel and IBM have a way better version of Cell than used in PS3.

PS3 will use the same Cell just with die-shrink... the Super Slim seens to use a 32nm version.

PS4 will use AMD processor and GPU... it's a good decision because AMD is cheap but in technical terms Intel and nVidia are more advanced then AMD today.



It is hard to compete against architectures which receive many times more funding. A significant problem going forwards is that to improve on the Cell they would need to break backwards compatibility anyway and GPU/X86/ARM development is significantly better funded than anything they can come up with on their own with a significantly larger market to amortize costs.

How does the Cell compare to CPU's of today, is it actually on par or better or has it been surpassed long ago?

(I haven't been keeping up with the tech news lately...)

Cell CPUs were fundamentally designed to work in parallel with one another, it's a case of one plus one yielding exponentially greater than two.

You can't really compare them, they are for different things, a Cell behaves a lot more like a GPU, if that makes any sense.



x86 and desktop GPUs might not be better but they have the development cash.
