Forums - Sales - Japan, a sales discussion

I don't think this arguement is  very useful as the worldwide leader typically thrives in all countries. All the systems like the ps2 that dominited in Japan also dominated the US and EUrope. It's hard to be the leader and not lead every major territory. And the US doesn't always follow down Japan's path look at X360 sales. This system isn't doing bad but by Japan's figures it should have sold less units then the ps3.

yea world wide is the way you have to look now . And by the way when did the Super Nintendo Dominate the Genesis? Hell why is the Genesis not even on the list? What the hell was the "PocketStation" that sold fairly well to be someting i never heard of?

xept genesis, sucked ass in japan but rest of the world loved it.

Genesis didn't sell in Japan (while it sold in the entire rest of the world outside of Japan) because Sega was originally an American company. This is well known in the history of videogames.

They carry that much nationalism. Just like how they treat Xbox..

Its that way the Saturn and PS1 were neck and neck until FFVII's release? Is that why Sega had and still does rule the arcade market? You are absolutely right, Japanese gamers sure do despise Sega because of its American roots.

considering saturn sold 6 of its 10 million consoles to Japan, i don't see the bias.  The fact is that Saturn had the Japanese style games that they wanted, and for the most part genesis and dreamcast didn't.

In fact saturn sold more than any other second place console ever in Japan, it even outsold the N64.  The only reason it died like it did was because developers moved to PS because it actually had a large userbase outside of Japan.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

I think this comparison is a bit arbitrary. One important thing it misses: Seasonality. After 21 weeks many of those systems had not yet had their first holiday sales.

Hardcore gaming is a bubble economy blown up by Microsoft's $7 $6 billion losses.

WOW Japannese people love NINTENDO for the 1st 21 weeks at least.....like 25% of all the gamecubes and N64's sold in Japan sold in the first 21 weeks...is that good for the Wii? the N64 had almost 2x the number of users in the 1st 21 weeks as the PS1 (sound familiar) The one thing Trend i see is in the console market Nintendo really shoots themself in the foot some how. If they could maintain sales they could have won every generation, but for some reason they can not, at least not with another Japanesee competitor. the super nintendo did well I think thats due to some misteps from Sega with the end of the Genisis' life . The SNES had a few misteps too...enter the Playstation

You do no that PS was launched with two years of head start right? You do also know that all loser system slowes down when 3rd party support disaper?

Buy it and pray to the gods of Sigs: Naznatips!

I don't think some of you actually ready beyond the list.

1. SNES and GENESIS. SNES was the leader in NA and Japan. The 'Others' market was for Sega. SNES won WW. Supports my hypothesis.

2. PS1 started slow, as did the Gameboy. Why? Becuase this was thier first try at the business. No Sony game machine existed at this time, that is the only why the 3rd time veteran Nintendo64 was leading. So, no the PS1 is not a good example of why the PS3 might come back. All succesor machines, SNES,GBA,PS2, etc started of good and then propelled to greatness.

3. Yes, Xbox did much worse in Japan than GC, yet it beat GC. GC also was significatly behind PS2 in Japan and was last in sales in the other two regions. I am not saying Japan alone is all that is needed. I am saying that domination in Japan will lead to domination in atleast one other region and thus worldwide.

4. Seasonality. I don't think this is a big a factor as you think. The only major console to not have a holiday season in this picture was the Playstation. It was also on the market quite a while before anyone else. Its first holiday sales were not that stellar by comparison to others, again due to the fact it was Sony's first machine and it took awhile to be warmly greeted by the general public.

5. @northstar - Genesis was not in this sites listing for console comparisons. SNES beat the Genesis in NA and Japan and thus Worldwide. Pocketstation was Sony's first attempt at a portable machine. It started out ok due to Sony's by then accepted name in the game world, yet failed overall to even touch the Gameboy Advances marketshare.
