Forums - Gaming - What games could not have been done last gen?

Gameplay wise?? Nothing, only the motion control stuff.

But many of the games worlds wouldn't have been as convincing and thus engaging. games like Assasins Creed would be gimped by poorer animation, fewer/less diverse NCP models and less believable cities. Discovering the alien world and species of Mass Effect wouldn't have been so enticing, nor would the using the biotics. The characters in Uncharted wouldn't be as lovable, nor would the set pieces pack as much as a punch.

I think people often undervalue how graphics/physics help make an experience more enjoyable.

Of course they would have been possible. They just wouldn't have looked as nice.

If you're talking about graphics then that would apple to all current gen games because the previous machines didn't have the specs to render HD. But if you strip away the graphics Uncharted is really just a cover shooter with some scripted events.

if you know anything about the techinical wonders that uncharted 2 gave birth to you would know why it wouldnt be possible on last gen consoles. and uncharted 3 expanded on those techinical innovations. uncharted 3 is probably the most techincally advanced game ever created, but apperantly you know nothing about the game. read these two articles and you will understand why

Yeah, Uncharted renders some pretty stuff. But go play Tomb Raider Legends and tell me an Uncharted game is impossible on the PS2 or Xbox.

you cleary didnt read the articles, if you did you would know why they couldnt be done on last gen consoles. the DOT(Dynamic Objects Traversal System) system is still something that only uncharted 2/3 (and GoW to an extent) have managed to do

Could Assassin's Creed climbing be done? The window ledges and all?

yeah, they animations wouldnt have been as good, not even close. and the window ledges would most probably have been texture's with bump/normal maps but overall they still could have done it

When a developer of a 1st party company says something can't be done on the competition I tend to take that statement with a grain of salt. Filippov hasn't developed a 360 game so he really can't say what can and can't be done on it any more than you or me. He's the lead programer and he should be proud of his programin tricks, but of course he's not going to divulge those tricks.

If you take all the processing power that it would take to render and entire level and then use it to render one big character you'll be able to do some pretty cool things. There's nothing in GOW III that is impossible on 360. Regardless of what Filippov says, they used tricks to make it look more impressive than it technically is. But that's what a god developer does. They take what they have and they pull out what they need. That's why Halo 4 looks so incredible and has such huge environments. In Halo 4 the level is a sprawling vista, in GOW the titan is the level and Kratos is a small scale character on a large scale character. It's a trick. A clever trick, but a trick none the less.

kratos isnt a small scaled character, he is the same size as the he is in the rest of the game. cronos is just unbelievably huge. the cronos boss fight is still one of the most techincally advanced creations in the history of video games. this is the second time you talk about a game without even knowing the technical aspect of the game. you clearly know nothing about the development of either GoW 3 or Uncharted2/3

You are assuming that Uncharted and GOW sacrifice nothing to gain the graphical splendor they display. The truth is that they pull a lot of clever tricks and don't waste processing on the things you don't see.

Take, for example, Resident Evil Zero on the Gamecube. It had the best looking character models at the time. Why? Because the environments were prerendered. Why are the titans so big and detailed? Because they are the environment. Everything that other games have to use to render an environments GOWIII used to render the Titan. Uncharted looks great too, but it restricts the player because on the other side of building there's nothing. They are elaborate movie like sets. Uncharted 3 has a great scene in a sandy desert. It looks great, but it's not really a technical marvel when you think about it.

The best looking games on any platform are doing two things right. Art direction and trickery.

OMG dude its not about the freaking GRAPHICS!! its how the damn levels play out!! you said it yourself cronos the titan was the GOD DAMN LEVEL but he is still a GOD DAMN HUGE CHARACTAR and they made the DAMN THING WORK! the entire LEVEL WAS MOVED, its no "trick", its ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY that made the damn thing work!! read about the freaking games before you comment about how the games work!!

in some cases its the other way around for me this gen

NFS last gen full motor and body customization along with speedbreaker and pursuit breaker this gen none of that and with the recent MW you cant even decide the color of your car

last gen 3 epic GTA within 3yrs with SA boosting the most content, this gen you get gta4 (which doesnt live up to any of the past 3 gta for many) and 5 that will release 4 yrs after 4

Oh I read them, but I didn't find anything that so amazing that it could be done elsewhere. The DOT system you mentioned is just what Naughty Dog came up with to solve a problem. Other games have characters/players moving around on moving objects. Halo puts players on giant Scarab walking things and Gears of War puts players on big truck tank things.

It's not impossible on other systems or in other games. The difference is that Naughty Dog wanted it more and put the effort into pulling the technical trickery to get it done.

With all do respect it's like you think the PS3 is some kind of miracle super computer.

If you strip away all the graphics and stuff, Uncharted is not just a cover shooter, it is a fairly average cover shooter. What makes Uncharted one of the best series of this generation is the characters and the emotion from the characters and unless you want to change the graphical style completely, much of this will be gone. You can't just strip away the graphics and have the same game, the graphics add so much to a game like Uncharted, they cannot just be separated. Even small details, such as the amazing animation in every regard really add to the immersion of the game and make you not realise that you are just playing a fairly standard cover based shooter

the DOTS isnt just to put players on tanks and gaint scarbs, its about the entire level moving with physics, gameplay and animation still working perfectly. this isnt the same as riding a tank and playing on it. and FYI they opted to create and use the DOTS so they dont have to use "tricks" and "illusions" like every other game does and like they had to do last gen games, which is why they couldnt make them last gen, which is why i said uncharted 2/3 when replying to the OP. in uncharted 3 the level is a huge ship, in the level is being dramtically moved by a simulated ocean, its not animated so everytime you play the level the ship movments are different and random, in the middle of the level the ship flips over and start to sink, the hole level literally flips. you start to play the game walking on were what before tha walls, all while still being dynamically moved by the ocean simulation. THIS COULD NOT BE DONE ON LAST GEN CONSOLES. they used no "tricks", it actually HAPPENED.

"With all do respect it's like you think the PS3 is some kind of miracle super computer."

i never said anything about the 360,PC not being able to do something and mentioned nothing about the PS3 being suprior console to the 360, your just putting words in my mouth that i never said or said something even remotly close to. the thread is about games that are could not happen on LAST GEN consoles, and uncharted is the first game that should be on that list

Red Dead Redemption- because of the detail and scope of the world
Uncharted series- last gen not powerful enough for the graphics
Wii sports/ Kinect sports/ sport champions- lack of motion controls

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

'When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called the people's stick'- Mikhail Bakunin

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030
