Nope and there will be a $80 price cut next summer and a few NES games for the people who paid the original price.

Free Fire Emblem 8 was totally worth it.

The best portable entry in my opinion.

Not like we got many of those. Or many Fire Emblem games in general.

I admit I'm biased, 2D Mario games are like the least interesting things in gaming to me, so part of that was me thinking about what games I would buy if I picked up a Wii U at launch.  Mario wouldn't even be in that picture.  Still, will people rush out to buy yet another Mario game?  Didn't one just come out?

I still think a lot of people are going to wait until the library builds.

That's worse than anecdotal evidence, :P. You're basically extrapolating upon your personal preference. Now, I personally don't find any of the PS2's games interesting or worth buying the console for, but that doesn't mean that there aren't ~160m people who disagree. We have to work with what we know people like, not what we like.

Also, there's no real evidence for a Mario game having been released recently negatively affecting this new one's sales. In fact - and this is what happened all the time on Wii and DS with NSMB, Mario Kart, etc. - people who buy the 3DS version may end up wanting the WiiU game, looking for more Mario.

You should see his prediction in the final 10 weeks thread. He has the XBox360 doubling the 3DS and the PS3 beating it by a couple million.

Which seems to have personally offended you, as you keep commenting about it, a fact that amuses me greatly.  Oh no, I know nothing about handheld numbers and have little interest in them.  I wouldn't have included them but it seemed mandatory.  I admit that freely.  Deal with it, get over it, or something.  It's already edging over into creepy.

Here, if it really upsets you that much, I officially appologize to the 3DS for under-estimating its future sales.  Now you can take a deep breath, as you've successfully defended the honor and feelings of an electronic device.

One word: Inflation.

I dont see how inflation plays any part in Nintendo pricing its system.  Its priced its console launch systems at $199 for 20 years (even though inflation changed year on year; each year), could have made the wii priced at $199 (it was profitable at 250) and that doesnt answer the initial question.

The first time in the modern console age that Nintendo is launching in bad economic times?

The idea is that once inflation is accounted for, the Wii U is launching at slightly more than Wii and N64. And a lot less than SNES and NES. So actually the price is on par with most previous Nintendo consoles.

What really affects the pricing however, is the fact that Nintendo is taking a loss on each Wii U sold. They can't go down much further in price. Whether or not consumers are fine with this price point, it's hard to say. 3DS was definitely overpriced (should've lauched at $199 I say), but unlike the Wii U, Nintendo wasn't taking a loss on it.

Worth noting: $410 = Wii U + 2 games, not just Wii U + Mario. Deluxe version is a bundle.

Not really

1991 savings and loan crisis, gulf war, bush no more taxes

2001 internet bubble crash, 9/11

The two successful launches were in rebound/boom times in 1985 (US growth above 8%) and 2006 (housing boom)

Apology accepted. Good of you to man up like that.
