Forums - Sales Discussion - Quality =/= sales

quality only can be attached to grafix
ideas cant be measured, and the resultant enjoyment varies depending on whos the user and hes likes

For starters, using Metacritic to determine quality makes about as much sense as using this website to determine sales. The standards and competition that Killzone 2 were being put up against are radically different than what Halo 4 is being put up against.

As for sales, just look at GT vs Forza this gen. All four Forza games have reviewed better than GT5 (so, according to your logic, must be better) yet GT5 will outsell all of them. Why? GT is a more mainstream franchise and has a longer history of quality.

Not to mention KZ2 vs Halo 4, how many consoles had PS3 sold when KZ2 was making its run? How many 360 consoles are out there right now? Yeah.

Sales and quality don't always equate, just like a lot of pop songs and big budget crash grab flicks and quality dont equate to classics. A game that has interesting characters is well built on a firm foundation but has accessibility for everyone will sell well. Your chances of that being a console shifter becomes even greater. Killzone is an inaccessible game for most to play, KZ2's controls were not suitable for a wider audience like Halo. It was more realistic, focusing on the weight of the weapon. Halo's gameplay style influenced games like COD which is why those two games run the FPS market. It's got great characters, fun maps and missions, great ways to play with your friends. This is what truly makes playing FPS on the Xbox 360 shine. Sony hasn't fully grasped this yet, but then again they excel at everything else compared to Microsoft. Sony's marketing is also a huge issue. Microsofts marketing is just godly.

But the 1st and the 2nd Resident Evil game sold a lot just check it out on VGS!!! RE1 8.99M (normal version=5.05M, directors cut=3.77 and dual shock=0.17M) And 11M on all its consoles!!!! And RE2 sold 6.70M copies on all its consoles !!!

Sales = Winner, bragging rights, popular, guaranteed sequel?
Quality = Metacritic

The problem with this thread is that it takes a very interesting concept but takes the worst two examples.  There are many factors that enter consideration with game sales including Brand Recognition.  Everyone has heard of Halo and it has a much broader appeal wheras Killzone isn't nearly as well known.  A better example of the same thread would be merely looking at one top notch quality game (or one series of top notch games) that has mediocre to bad sales.

Take Metroid for example.  Metroid Prime is one of the top reviewed games of all time and every single one (lets leave out other: m for this one) reaks of huge budgets and incredible production value.  And yet the TOP selling one didn't even hit the 3 million mark. The rest barely got over the 1 million.

In the end it comes down to recognition and appeal.  MGS, Resident Evil (the survival horror ones), or to be more general stealth and survival horror games in general will never have massive sales.  Even though many of them are considered to be truly incredible experiences it will never just reach the level of more mainstream games.  Killzone doesn't seem to have that mainstream appeal.  Also, one has to take into consideration the effects of sequels on a review score.

A review of a game that is on its seond iteration is bound to be more forgiving than one on its 5th iteration.

All in all its an interesting subject but you need to find a more apples to apples comparison,  might I suggest Killzone vs Resistance?

Now I take issue with this, despite the point your trying to make.

Games that got 90+ in 2006-2009 can't be changed. But every rational mind would agree that if those games would be reviewed in 2012 they would get lower averages due to changing standards.

Sales aint quality, but it determines level of interest, the act of putting your money where your mouth is. Halo is a gamers game. KZ is more niche since it had significant hype and marketing at the time.

Sorry for being horrendously late to the party, but I had to respond to this when I saw it just now.

I completely disagree with the bolded statement. Just because a game comes from an older generation doesn't mean it's inferior to a more recent game, or will be judged to be inferior by critics.

Americans love FPS games...but the PS3 install base is a bit over half of what 360 is in North America. So, all attach ratios being the same, you would expect a PS3 FPS to sell about half as well with a similar score.

Halo CEA was reviewed lower in 2011, despite being a high 90s game in 2001.

Perfect Dark Zero has a 81 meta.......it would not get a 81 meta in 2012. Perfect Dark got a 97 on metacritic....the upgraded in every possible way 360 port got a 79.....

Its common sense. It sucks but its reality.

"Halo 4 (estimated LT sales based on a secret formula): 10.9m"
LOL! I'm sure many people would love that, including Microsoft. I don't see it selling that much unless its bundled.

Anyway I think you're wrong. Quality DOES equal sales. What you are missing is that there are a lot of factors involved in determining "quality". Reviews don't always do the best job of this. Marketing is a big part of it. If a game is of good quality but no one knows about it, it won't sell. Simple as that.

I was about to point out that that the Killzone franchise is growing with each release, but I'm wrong. Sales for KZ3 don't look to ever surpass Killzone 2....so what is the problem here? I think Killzone IP isn't appealing to the PS3 FPS crowd. Speaking for myself, I played the multiplayer beta, but it wasn't anything special.....for the single player demo, I even got stuck lmfao.
