Just a suggestion to OP.
Put the scores next to the reviing party as it would take up less space and be easier to read in blocks.

although I have seen more news saying you cannot get a wii u at midnight! Yikes! |
Good news would have been 9/10 for NSMBU :P
I seriously wonder what it would take to get a 9/10 on meta/gameranking for a 2D Mario these days...

Honestly, if NSMBU had a different art style and new music, it'd be above 90.

Time is also relative to how big your development staff is. Nintendo doesn't often work with huge teams like 3rd parties do. |
I would also argue that "working on" probably has a different meaning within Nintendo as it does third party publishers, especially when it comes to games like New Super Mario Bros.
Nintendo games are often (very) gameplay mechanic driven, and I would expect that Nintendo could spend years with a tiny development team creating new gameplay mechanics and small test levels; and after the gameplay mechanics have (mostly) been worked out, their development team can (more or less) rapidly produce a game around them. While I could be wrong, I wouldn't be surprised if one of Mario's power ups was developed by one person over time and had several revisions, and they tweaked how everything in the game reacted to this power up until they were happy with it; and it might take 6 months for their designer to be happy with a power-up they're working on, they may have mutiple being worked on at the same time, and it could take 18 to 24 months before they have enough new power-ups to make a new Mario game.
In contrast, most third party developed games are really based on the creation of new environments and adding onto an established story with the gameplay mechanics (mostly) remaining intact; so beginning work on a game (probably) means development of most of this new content.

Yeah, deep down inside I know that... It's such a shame that they're sticking with the same old art style... Back in the days they used to have new styles for each and every Mario game!!

Eh. Sort of. I think it was more of a result of changing technology. Super Mario Bros. and Lost Levels look by and large the same. World and Yoshi's Island have differences but in general are very similar.

Not really. Most reviews tend to be embargoed until the day of. Sometimes they go up beforehand but that's the exception not the rule. With Zombi U, Ubisoft has been pretty generous in terms of allowing the press to cover it, so I don't get the impression that they're trying to hide a game they think is crap. Mind you, that doesn't mean it's not a bad game, just that Ubisoft doesn't think so.
In terms of the Gamespot review, I'm not taking it too seriously. Partially because I don't take Gamestop too seriously in general, but also because of the complaints leveled against the game. The biggest complaint seems to be that the game isn't more action oriented, which wasn't what I was looking for anyways.
What makes me angry about NSMB U is the music is exactly the same! Three years of development time, c'mon Nintendo hire a few musicians to give me a few new music tracks.
I'm OK with the graphics being similar in style just in HD.
