Three things:

1 - DS had two christmas.
2 - There's some really heavy hitters coming
3 - 3DS won't ever be the DS - the Cooking Mama age is past.

They are going to have to find some new stuff to lure people in then. The casuals will always be there. Right now they are picking up every tablet in the world as if they were about to be endangered. I think a new Pokemon game would be the only thing to make a lasting effect on sales. Mario is great and all, but Pokemon is what gets people talking.

3. But the hardware sales are pretty close. I think at this point the DS may be just a little bit ahead.

The whole data you're using for this thread is wrong, check my post again.

Did you just use gaf anything with me? I go by what Vgchartz says. Still off by 10 million.

It's not gaf, it's nintendo's official numbers.

Well, like I said, one christmas less, and probably a huge collection of big games coming soon, plus digital sales, as manuel said, will put 3DS in a better view.

BTW... at the same time frame (6 quarters) DS had 60.44 million software shipped (check the the link again), less than 3DS. The whole thread is wrong, Ryan.

When did the DS come out. Keep in mind that the numbers for that are only until March 31st 2006 and for 3DS till now.

DS came out near Christmas 2004.

Anyway, I still expect the DS to trounce the 3DS when it comes to hardware and software sales.  Next year at this time, the DS will have a clear lead.

Exactly, even though I'm starting to think it won't be as ugly as I thought before. 3DS is not stalling, it's also growing, imo.

3DS has eshop and many games to download (almost 200 in Japan), so if you factor 3DSWare and Virtual Console in the numbers ought to be closer.

I was going to say something along those lines.  The eshop sales should be a decent boost considering there are even full retail titles on it now along with VC, 3DSWare, and DSiWare.  I've probably spent more money on the eshop than I did buying my 9 retail 3DS games (NSMB2 I bought on eshop though).  While this might not be the case for most 3DS owners it is safe to assume that most have at least gotten a couple titles from the eshop.   I found a few sites that talk about download figures like this Nintendo Life article.

"Considering the fact that Wii and DSi are on the decline due to newer systems, the turnaround can undoubtedly be put down to the big online push that's been given to 3DS and its eShop"

What?

DS came out in november 2004. 6 fiscal quartes later, just like the 3DS completed now puts its software at this number with two christmas in the bag.

It's easily explained: DS third party support was practically inexistant in the first years.

Why the "What?"? I was just asking if the time periods were infact as long. But, isn't it 7 quarters for 3DS (released in February 2011 in Japan)?

Sorry, more rude than I meant. I read your post again, I think I understand it better now - I read it wrongly before.

First link says projected sales are 75million...those are not shipment numbers. Second link clearly states 60.4million DS games were shipped.

Also, VGChartz tracks sold numbers, not shipped numbers so it will obviously be undertracked. According to Nintendo's shipped numbers, they shipped 64.45 million 3DS games.

This thread is just terrible .-.

3DS is at about 53m units of software after six quarters. The latest quarter was the seventh.

Oh yeah, my mistake - missed the first number up there!

Thank god then the next is christma's then, because now the fight really got a little ugly!

History is against Nintendo. Trend all comes in twos, as you know.

What trend are you talking about?  Home consoles or hand helds?  Because the only trend in hand held market is Nintendomination.

I don't know what VGChartz numbers you're using, because I'm seeing under 58 million software sales.

Anyway, I think the 3DS will pass the DS again in both numbers during the Holidays -- then DS will once again take the lead around Feb-Mar 'during' holiday '06.

We all know Nintendo's Home/Handheld consoles' improvement of its predecessor doesn't do as well in sales.
