Its going to be a success. The people that said this would be a huge flop couldn't have been more wrong. Imagine how well all the Windows 8 tablets combined are going to do in general this holidays and during 2013.

Ballmer said OVER 400Milions Windows8/WP8 Phones will be sold in 1 year... So From now to October 2013.

Windows 8 is another Story since many people just upgrade their Software and dont buy New Pcs.

So Probably 650m W8 and > 400M Windows8/Wp8 devices

lol u misunderstood. What is included in those 400 million? Obviously he included Win 8 operating systems for PCs, so it's going to be like 380 million software packs (Win 8 OS for PC) and perhaps 20 million hardware devices (Windows smartphones and Windows tablets).

A measly 20 million hardware devices powered by a Microsoft system (excluding PCs). At best.

Meanwhile Apple sells 150 million phones and tablets in a year and Android another 500 million.

Keep in mind that total worldwide yearly shipments of smartphones by all vendors is around 700 million and tablets I would think much less, perhaps 100 million.

Android dont sell any phones.  Android is an operating system option for manufacturers.  Those manufactureres will release windows 8 phones and tablets.  Windows 8 tablets will be far superior to Android tablets in a number of key ways that you seem to want to ignore.

Surface doesn't seem to be better than a $200 Android tablet, let alone the upcoming 10 inch tablet. I don't say it, The Verge says it so.

ROFL.

That measily number is already at 5 million beofre the launch as Surface RT is SOLD OUT.

So that leaves only 15 million by your count in 364 days across Surface RT/Pro and all its counterparts Nokia, Asus etc.

Also worth noting is that double the amount of companies are building Windows 8 devices than that that support Android.

I fail to see the logic.

Android and IOS will not sell nearly half as many devices from now on as Windows 8.

I love the whole look and layout. It the RT just isn't for me.

At some point down the road when these aren't such a wallet drain I will have one of the Pro models.

Its a real sexy design all the way around. I expect them to sell well.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

I wonder why I knew this was a selnor thread only by reading the thread title.

Anyways, astonishing, considering that so far I haven't read a single positive review, only mixed ones.
But I guess with a marketing budget of 1,5 - 1,8 billion dollars like that for Windows 8 and surface, one could even make people stand in line for poop. Reminds me of the Windows 95 release, where the marketing campaign was so massive and successful that even people who didn't even own a computer and didn't intend to buy one went out to buy Windows 95.
And that was a 200 million marketing campaign.

Probably because it is related to microsoft and he tends to over exaggerate everything related to MS in the title and OP.

and others says different... "so"

Sorry, I didn't notice  you had said Windows 8 tablets. Since the topic is about RT, I assumed you were talking about it and didn't notice the lack of RT word. Of course, W8 tablets will be much better than any other offerings.

5 million sold already? LOL! No.

How much do you think was in that first shipment? It's likely it's much less than a console launch, and a console launch usually has 1.5 million shipped during a whole Holiday season.

So the "sold out" is probably 100K units or so. And another 3-5 million units are about to be manufactured according to rumours in one quarter. It remains to be seen how many millions will stay unsold on shelves.

5 million already sold before launch.

You're a comedian Selnor.

I'm sorry, I was actually alive back then.  I was on the Windows 95 beta.  I was one of 250 beta testers out of 100,000 invited to the launch party at Microsoft.  Besides securing Jay Leno for the launch party, and the rights to the Rolling Stones' song "Start Me Up", how was the marketing campaign for Windows 95 massive?

As I seem to recall the marketing campaign for Windows 95 consisted of one or two commercials featuring the Rolling Stone song, and a handful of print ads.

And fuck me if I'm not right.  Two commercials.

The primary one "Start Me Up":

and "Multitasking"
http://youtu.be/Tw-GGT6900s

Considering that there was more at stake in 1995 for Microsoft in the OS market than there is today, I'm rather surprised that the marketing was so subdued.  Though, the "Start Me Up" ad was one of the most effective commercials I've ever seen.  Not since the recent IE9 commercial has Microsoft struck such gold.

"Too Close"

I've never understood the urge of some people to get devides on launch day. Can't they wait a little longer? (3days or something).
About surface, I want to upgrade my Ipad (IPad 1) in one year or two. And that surface is looking better and better... Although I've already spent some money on Apps, books, music, etc. So it's gonna be a har decision

Holy shit. But its about time that apple will get some heavy competition.

I still believe it's going to be a huge flop.

I know it's hard, but what would you consider a success? 5% of marketshare in the first year? 10%? 20%?

I believe less than 5% first year marketshare for all Windows tablets and at the end of 2013 there will be no signifcant growth of that marketshare and analysists will have declared it as a flop and MS will have lost money on this expensive adventure.
