I buy portable systems  I have every type of Gameboy a GameGear  I have a DSlite a PSP and a 3ds + XL (no Vita so far)  I usually play those things  on my couch/bed etc.

Once in a while when going on vacation  I take one of the handheds with me.

I never play them in a subway  or bus  I never play them outside of my house   only when I want to play coop at a friends house etc.

I never use those devices in public at all.  Same goes for my firends or people I know that have those devices.


Next month the WiiU comes out it is a normal console but at the same time has this "handheld like" controller with built in screen.  This allows me to lie on my couch use headphones and play  just like i would with a normal handheld.  No TV etc required.

So I wondered if the WiiU somehow would grab a chuck of the handheld market (since I am pretty sure there is more people than me and my friends that use their handhelds the way I do)

What do you think? Do you play your handheld systems when in a bus/subway etc?

If 3DS games were offered on the Wii U, I would never touch my 3DS ever again. I only ever play it when I'm at home anyways...

If the Wii U gets those handheld games, sure, it'll do some damage. I don't think it'll happen, though. Nintendo wouldn't want to cannibalize sales.

For me -- yes. I have both a 3DS and Vita, but I play them primarily around the house. The 3DS XL and Vita are not pocket friendly anyway, but it is convienant to have them around the house.

But Wii U -- I can get full console games on the gamepad + likely NES/SNES/Genesis/N64/GameCube virtual console and eShop content ... it's going to smoke the 3DS/Vita for me.

I'd like to see more Wii U HD versions of 3DS games too, Monster Hunter 3G Ultimate should just be the start, I'd like to see a Wii U HD version of Kid Icarus Uprising as well.

When hackers find a way to play DS/3DS with the Wii U yes...but in real life I don't think so, there will be multiple games that won't be available on the Wii U but will be in the 3DS/Vita. And there is still a lot of people who like to play games on handhelds rather than a smartphone (although this people are a minority and will probably decrease over time). It will surely affect them, but not enough to "destroy" the handhelds.

Pokemon will remain portable, same as MH

In the US I think it's another nail in the coffin for the handheld market.

Part of the handheld's appeal here was the "kid gets grounded, stomps into his room and plays DS/Game Boy" ... Wii U can really replace that.

Why play a crappy watered down version of CoD or Lego Batman or whatever ... when you can play the actual console version?

The moment some third party releases a signal enhancer/bouncer for the Wii U wireless signal that extends its range ... it's totally on.

In Japan it may be a game changer also, it is IMO the last, best hope for the console business in Japan, it's a console practically designed for the Japanese lifestyle, where most homes only have one primary TV, that's why a lot of people have migrated to just playing on their handhelds even at home there. Wii U may have a shot at reversing that.

Granted even for this, it'll now be pretty easy to get an AC adaptor for the Wii U and bring it along on family trips in the car.

So wish I had this kind of stuff as a kid, kids today are pretty lucky, lol.
