In my opinion, the sad reality is that videogame journalism is better than most forms of journalism out there ...

At the end of the day a person who read the "review" and played the game will develop their own opinion of the game and if they have a different experience they will trust you less as a reviewer; and this keeps reviewers honest to some extent.

In contrast, when the mainstream media simply avoids reporting on news stories because they're damaging to their preferred political party and/or candidate very few people hear about the story through other methods so there is little risk of being discovered for being overwhelmingly biased.

The industry is very, very, very immature. The Wii opened up gaming to more people, but the industry didn't take this chance to grow and instead decided to spit on these consumers. Gaming journalism is, as you say, more of additional advertisement for products rather than critical evaluation of them. Gamers themselves (those who post on the internet) are for the most part brats who think they are educated while they blindly move in herds to buy the next hyped game.

There's just way too much fanboyism involved in gaming on all levels (publishers, developers, journalists, gamers) for it to be taken as seriously as other media, like movies or music. There are simply way too many manchildren in this industry.

Nice, except for the 2nd sentence and ofcourse your high regards for the movie and music industry.

Updated original post with links to editors blog.

It's not too bad since "IGN" gave Pokemon BW 2 a 9.6.

Well at least some sites are forced to look at their relationships with publishers now. Something positive has at least come out of this whole debacle.

Hmmm... did anyone else notice this little gem:

Hohoho, you are digging up the dirt.

Dirt is good

I have a vague recollections of some threads mentioning some of the stuff in his post.

Well, it's certainly interesting, but it needs to be taken with a grain of salt, because Maxwell was biased himself. So while what he says may have truth to it, not everything he said is/was as bad as he described it.

Yeah, I know, it's only one person's opinion/viewpoint afterall. Thought it was an entertaining read nonetheless.

It really is a shame. Reading the article, I think he's asking the same questions that are on a lot of gamer's minds. As far as editing articles, I remember IGN doing something similar with Pixeljunk Sidescroller when a developer called them out on something. Problem was, they edited the article without even mentioning they edited it....one of the reasons I don't listen to IGN's reviews.
