Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft screwed up with the Surface tablet...

I agree 100% with the OP. My biggest beef with the Surface is that it is so very overpriced. I was going to get a surface but I'll probably either get some other companies cheaper windows 8 tablet/laptop hybrid or ultrabook.

Same here.

There's no meaning in wishing back the good old days when everything was x86. Microsoft should have simply done the transition to ARM much earlier. For years they postponed something that was inevitable.

They have THE dominant operating system for x86-based desktop PCs. Unfortunately their operating system has been limited to exactly those types of computers. That was no problem in the 90s, but the world has changed since and Microsoft had no idea how to react, because fundamental design decision like being restricted to a single CPU architecture are nowadays more and more becoming a burden and open systems are the laughing winners now. And you can't just develop a x86-CPU that has all the advantages of the ARM design.
The world has changed, and nowadays, for every x86-based CPU, about 10-20 ARM-based CPU are being produced if I remember correctly. Up until now, Microsoft had absolutely nothing in store for these devices.

If even you think like this though, I'd say RT is in trouble :).

Still, I say it will be a successful product. The interface is very nice on tablets, and as long as there is a decent flow of apps there won't be much to complain about it apart from the price. I think the price will drop very quick though. It is a $300 worth of tablet, nothing more.

I think the fact Windows 8 is very esthetically pretty and that everything Microsoft is bundling with it runs smooth and much more fluid than stuff on  Android or iPad will carry it with the masses. If they can fill the app store quickly, that will help too.

But for PC users who are finally looking to have that PC experience in a tablet form, Surface RT is not the answer.

I agree with this 100%

Whether some like it or not almost all reviews are saying that as a Productivity station RT DOES offer more than Android and IPAD. Some reviews even mentioning there is workaround apps available on IPAD or Android but these dont come colse to what RT Office offers the user.

Also something of note that reading reviews I wasnt aware of, is RT is shipping with the legacy or desktop version of Internet Explorer. Meaning all those videos etc on IPAD and Anroid that come up saying sorry cannot be viewed on this device can be viewed on Windows RT. Thought that was quite significant also.

Something else that RT has is the keyboard. I just doublechecked my preorder and for 399 GBP I am being sent the touch cover free. Nice.

Sure you can get Bluetooth keyboards for other OS's Tablets, but these need charging and carrying around.

All reviews basically say that the apps are holding it back. Something which will not matter in 6 months time. As devs will not be able to ignore the largest userbase for apps around.

For the crowd that looks for a tablet experience with the best available productivity its a no brainer Surface RT.

If like above you want a PC experience wait for Surface Pro.

If battery life is similar, I'd see myself buying a touch screen ultrabook before the Surface Win8 Pro. That's from a hardware format perspective, seeing as how I wouldn't use the Surface without the keyboard cover. Might save a bit on weight, but for regular keyboard use, I'd rather have a laptop keyboard than the soft carbon contact keypads I'm assuming the Surface uses.

I'd have to compare price/spec/performance ratios before making the call though.

If nothing else, Win8 will usher in the new generation of standardized touchscreen enabled PCs, which is something I've wanted to see from Apple for about 1-2 years running.

Theres the ability to buy a type cover keyboard. The same as touc cover but with actual buttons.

Well I just held the surface and played around with it. It is one awesome piece of hardware.
Even in it's current baby-Windows 8 form, its a very enticing device. I may actually get it now lol...

Also, I could barely get in to play with it as the lineups were massive. I think this will be a quite big product for Microsoft.

Lastly, the amount of Windows 8 apps that are on my tablet now after I put the full Windows 8 on it last night is staggering. The app store literally doubled in a day. So yeah, I may have jumped the gun with my lack of apps doom and gloom...as did many reviewers who reviewed it early.

The price and lack of X86 version doom and gloom still stands.

I really don't think the price is that much of an issue. As in I don't think it's terribly overpriced.

I'm pretty sure MS isn't trying to compete with cheap tablets; they're trying to compete with the high end ones and are priced appropriately.

Sure, everyone wants to buy more product for less, but in this instance, I think the consumer is pretty much getting exactly what they're paying for.

The only thing that seems overpriced is the $129 keypad cover.

I just installed Windows 8 on this PC and it feels like the whole thing is turbocharged. Everything I do is slick and it feels like one click in Windows 8 is worth two in Windows 7. On the desktop the difference between this and the release candidate is staggering! It feels like they've released a service pack because 70% of my previous complaints with the UI and feel of the system as well as the app support have been sorted out.

Tease.

Why people buy this or ipads for 600$ is beyond me. Buy a foreign tablet that is usually just as good for 150$. I still would not buy that because I would rather spend extra money on games :P.

Of course they screwed up. Did anyone seriously except MS had any chance to break into this highly competitive market where Apple is GOD?

Huge failure as expected just like Windows Phone 8. MS has no future in tablets nor phones.

The only successful business they'll ever have is operating systems.

When even the few hardcore Microsoft fans here already are openly admitting they are canceling their plans of buying the Surface it's very clear that the writing is on the wall.
