Forums - Nintendo - Wii U GamePad have 1/60 of a second delay

If Nintendo had allowed a quarter or even a tenth of a second of lag on the Wii U's Bluetooth GamePad, the console may have been irreparably crippled out of the gate. And with an on-board touchscreen, motion sensing, microphone and camera, latency factors could have added up fast.

But as Ubisoft's Michel Ancel reportedly told Nintendo Power this month, the tiny amount of latency present should be practically unnoticeable.

It's crazy, it's so fast. It's almost instant.

"It's crazy because [on the TV] the game is running in full HD, we are streaming another picture on the GamePad screen, and it's still 60 frames per second," Ancel said about the most recent build of Rayman Legends. "The latency on the controller is just 1/60 of a second, so it's one frame late. It's crazy, it's so fast. It's almost instant."

When using a second GamePad, the frames per second will drop to 30, though we'll have to wait to see how discernible that is, as none of the system's North American launch titles feature dual-GamePad compatibility.

But 1/60 of a second absolutely won't be detectable lag for most, not that we're above blaming latency if you beat us at Tekken.

Well, just by imagining being one frame behind at 60 fps you'll realize how extremely small this delay is.

Great news.

Oh my gosh. That's basically the same amount of lag expected from the average TV, if not even less lag. :O

If you can potentially have a demanding multiplayer game with three screens going at once (TV + 2 Gamepads), and still do 30fps, that would be incredible.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Excellent!

So depending on your TV, then your Gamepad will actually be ahead, equal, or very slightly behind.

That's great. What it all really means is that there is no difference between TV and Gamepad screen.

As long as everything works and I am not ripping my public hair out in frustration then we are all good.
