Forums - General - The Suicide of Amanda Todd

People, she wasn't bullied.

She flashed a random guy, and then had sex with a guy who had a girlfriend. A victim is someone who is picked on because s/he is weak, or based on a trait (ie race, class, weight, etc. etc.), not someone who wants attention and when s/he gets it, it's not the kind s/he expected.

Sorry, but I don't feel bad for her.. To put it bluntly, she put on a strip show for a stranger, abused drugs and alcohol, and "hooked up" with another girl's boyfriend. Call me crazy, but I feel like she committed suicide because she knew she fucked up big time. Still, she shouldn't have resorted to suicide.

Except for the possible assault, no one should be charged with this. It was wrong of them but it shouldn't be illegal.

I can agree to a certain extent, but cyber bulling has to be stopped somehow. Suicide hasn't just happened once, but has happened on various occassions. If it were to be made illegal, then it'd infringe on our right to freedom of speech, but what can be done about the problem?

There are already restrictions on freedom of speech. You think you can post a threat to kill the president / prime minister / royal family and you won't have the jackboot brigade kicking in your door? Certain types of threats and extreme speech can be and is criminalised.

But where does cyber-bullying start and end? a lot of what's said on these forums could become ciminal under a cyber-bullying law. So it's not that the theory of criminalising cyber-bullying is objectively bad, but defining it so that it can work in practice would be enormously difficult.

directly causing emotional distress, isolating and blackmailing an underage girl, and persisting on as she attempts to switch schools or attemps suicide, is purely illegal (and sociopathic)

how can you consider that unrelated to her suicide ??

That attitude makes me much more afraid about society than this suicide. Suicides happen all the time, but it only takes one stupid leader to say, yeah, because this one person died I think causing emotional distress should be a criminal offence.

It's not unrelated but they are not criminally implicit in her death. She took all of the actions towards that. What they did was wrong, OK, but this should be a rallying point for helping other people before they commit suicide instead of charging people. Oh and it's not sociopathic either, it's human behaviour in the normal range.

75% of women are fucked up in the head.  I've watched them.  I've studied them.  At times, I've used them.  I'm not proud of it, by the way.  This was even before the internet began to dominate lives like it does today.  Have you ever seen those "Girls Gone Wild" commercials?  Women flashing their tits for nothing more than a t-shirt and to be told they're beautiful.   Women do anything to fit in, be accepted, and to feel like they're pretty.  I've "hooked up" with other guy's WIVES.  Again, not proud of it.  Just using it to illustrate the fact that some guys can be really charming and persuasive and some women make poor decisions.  It was almost too easy to convince a woman that somehow, having sex with her is going to cause some magical connection and you'll be together forever. These were grown women.  I imagine a 14-15 year old would be even easier.

She "put on a strip show for a stranger".  Man, if it were 2007-2008 (hell, maybe it still goes on today.  I don't play anymore.) you'd be shocked how many women were flashing their tits on UNO for Xbox Live.  Just look for a feminine sounding username like Batgirl69 (a name I honestly remember from those days), join their game, make a few flirty comments, and watch the show.  In the heat of the moment, it's easy to overlook the consequences.  Yeah, it was stupid of them to flash their boobs to an anonymous person on the web (though, in Todd's case, it was supposed to have been amongst people she knew.).  Would they deserve it if I:

  • recorded the incident without their permission
  • threatened to show it to people they knew unless they "put on a show"

Fuck it.  My hearts not into it.  I'm feeling sick.  Besides, it's not my place to try to change your opinion.

Some of you don't get it. You haven't been in her shoes, so it's hard to understand what she went through. It's easy to say that she should have fought back or whatever, but it seems that she was a fragile person.

The law exists to protect everyone, but most importantly weak people. It has always been the case. Lucretius, a Roman writer from the first centurty BC notes that people used to live like animals, but decided to live together to protect themselves. Men decided to make laws in order to protect their wives and children, because they were physically weak.

This girl was obviously emotionally weak. Bullying has nothing to do with freedom of speech. Just like child pornography, it should be monitored. I'm glad that in the uk they take racism for example very seriously.

I'm disgusted not only by the bastard that blackmailed her, but even more by her schoolmates that bullied her, they deserve a long and horrible life.

She was 15. Why did people expect her to make smart decisions? why are many of you labeling her attention whore? She was a girl and a kid, ofc she needed attention....

It's absolutely disgusting that such things go unnoticed in this world. But the sad part really is, that the bullies won, they got what they wanted, now I hope the same shit happens to them.

But, you never know what is going on in someones mind, she seemed like any other person. Just depressing it had to end this way :(

I can't judge, but it is a very fishy situation. In these contexts there is a lot of self-victimizing and attention seeking. True bullying is unacceptable, but the situation is often fed. Granted, she is too young to have enough judgement, but probs so were those that harped on her. And in those contexts, a lot of that happens outside of the internet, but now we just see the full stupidity of it on all ends. I mean all this for flashing your boobies? Come on.

The more intelligent ones of earth should be there to protect both sides (bullies and victims) from their own stupidity. Sadly many of these contexts are void of proper intelligence because they are isolated.
