But admits that it would "love to be further along" with sales of the handheld.

Sony admits that it would "love to be further along" with sales of PlayStation Vita, but believes that "judging [the] console before it has had its first Christmas is preposterous".

Speaking in the latest issue of MCV, PlayStation UK MD Fergal Gara admitted that the release schedule for PlayStation Vita "did dry up during the summer," but that new releases should "ignite" hype for the handheld in the run-up to Christmas.

"We'd love for us to be further on," Gara told the magazine. "And the release schedule for Vita was rather like the release schedule for the industry this year, in that it did dry up during the summer. We had that incredible summer of sport and very little focus on gaming.

"But the great news is that we have got the content in place. We have got the cash to invest in terms of marketing and retail to really ignite it this Christmas. To start judging a console before it has had its first Christmas is preposterous, really. And we are giving it everything we have got."

PlayStation Vita has struggled to sustain sales since its release in February.

It was revealed yesterday that the console had finally managed to crack 1 million sales in Japan.

Vita's success this Christmas will no doubt lie in the hands of four key titles: Assassin's Creed III: Liberation, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified, Need For Speed: Most Wanted and FIFA 13.

FIFA 13 released late last month. The game was criticised for featuring "no significant differences" to February's FIFA Soccer.

It's good to know that Sony is at least now publicly acknowledging it needs to do more in supporting the Vita.

So we now have Sony's permission to judge the console immediately after this Christmas? Fine by me.

Well when you put it that way... Yeah.

Fair enough, lol, but I don't think this Christmas is going to be very easy either.

Wii U is kind of a quasi-handheld, I think it's going to hurt both the 3DS and Vita by opening up the door for people to play console quality games away from the TV (especially if/when accessory manufacturers start releasing signal bouncers for the Wii U wireless signal).

Then you also have iPad mini yet to come, and I think that is going to be on a lot of kids' wishlists above and beyond either Vita (or 3DS for that matter).

The only thing preposterous is Sony's own first year sales prediction when you look at sales since February.

Bu-bu-bu-bu-but, sales are acceptable, then why are they releasing those statements?

hopefully Assassins creed, P4G and Cod will do something for it

But Kaz Hirai said Vita sales are "pretty much along where we would expect it to be".

Hum...

At the end of the day it's a shame as it really is a brilliant handheld - easily the best handheld gaming device ever. Pity that the lack of top tier games is not here (yet) and high than normal price in thse hard times are affecteing sales.

But it sure as hell doesn't affect me enjoying it immensely and that at the end of day is all that matters.

Vita is easily the only console what has had consistent negativity thrown at it from the get go. One of those devices that you can easily dismiss if never played it, but once played is hard to ignore it's quality.

Post Christmas: Judging Vita after its first Christmas is preposterous.
