Forums - Gaming - Glad to see XCom is getting a marketing push...

I had not heard of this series, or this game until recently. I had thought it of it initially as a budget-shooter (Binary Domain, etc), but my opinion has greatly changed since then due to the marketing push.

Sony needs to take notes on marketing haha

I played my first real abduction after the tutorial (which lasted WAY too long), and managed to get all my soldiers killed. Need more soldiers per squad. In original X-com, I always had a squad of 8. 4 is just not enough.

That was a concern for me when I was reading the previews, but the game feels nicely balanced for the smaller squad size. And you can upgrade to 5 or 6 pretty quickly, at least if you're lucky enough to have one tough bastard who just won't die and ranks up a lot like my own Eduardo "Kingpin" Marquez, Argentinian badass extraordinaire.

Well, looks like they are in keeping with the original.  I understand in the original XCom, the idea was almost all your squad would end up dying, and a few would survive and you would get attached to them.  When I did try to play the original XCom, I didn't know this is what happened, so my soldiers would die, and I felt like I was doing something wrong.

Good to see that classic franchises get picked up again. Maybe my dream of a Commandos reboot will come true after all.

That is a reason to root for XCom to go at least into sleeper hit, if not surprise hit, selling several million at least.  This would then drive the videogames industry to consider turn-based strategy.  This would be particularly true if the console versions sell well.  It would make EA reconsider on a number of things, for example.   EA took out the turn-based global conquest mode from Kane's Wrath (I hope i have the right C&C title) because their management thought console gamers didn't buy turn-based strategy games.  Of course, Civ Revolution ended up outselling it in the end.

Another thing I hope happens is the game does end up having a link of some sort to the XCom FPS that is going to be coming out.  I am a fan of worlds in fiction.  Like, I would love to see Bioshock Infinite somehow link to the prior Bioshock.

Yeah. It's a lot easier to get attached this time because your guys are much more differentiated: how they look and what color armor you give them and what perks you take as they level up, right down to the little flag of their home country on the back of their armor. By the time the little guy hits sergeant and earns his very own nickname, you've kind of bonded with him. And when you're helpless to watch as a chrysalid rips open his guts and lays an egg in them, it hurts.

I only wish that you could pick what specialty your guy takes (I never have enough damn snipers) and that every voice didn't have an American accent.
