Sony's competitors have never been stronger. We have a new comer - Apple going from strength to strength in the multimedia/connected device market, Microsoft is going to launch the biggest combined content delivery network when they link Duranga with Windows 8 and Nintendo finally have an HD console which has more than adequate graphics for mainstream users.

Why sony is not doomed?

Surely the simple answer is in the sales of the ps3. has it not been the highest selling home system world wide for the last 6 months?

It's not about the sales, it's about the corporate profit and loss on those sales.   If they are still taking losses (which they did last quarter), that's a bad thing for a company looking to move into the next generation where costs are going to be high again.

If they are taking losses now I don't think it'd be logical to attribute it to PS3, how could it possibly be losing money right now? It's PS4 R&D and maybe Vita losses.

Which actually goes to show that PS3 isn't doing nearly as well as Sony needs it to do right now. We can only hope that the PS4 will turn things around for Sony

Didn't they post some losses not too long ago? But yeah, better wait for their yearly-report-thingy-I-can't-remember-the-name-of....

They did take a loss last quarter.  here's the problem with looking at Sony Games division figures.

Back in 2007 (or 2008, forget which...look it up later), Sony moved the Games division into a larger division housing many different products.  Made it hard to tell if profits and losses were directly attributable to the games or not.   Over the years, they kept moving the games segment into differnt departmnets and eventually the department that had the games department in it started posting profits.  To this day, no one but Sony knows for certain if those profits came from the games segment.

Last quarter, Sony finally moved the games division back into it's own segment....and it posted a loss.    Their R&D budget also gets listed.  That's not enough to overtake profits and generate losses.    Vita is indeed a possibility and one I've suggested many times here but everyone tries to tell me that Vita is making profits....so that leaves the PS3.   However, I'm not one to to just take everyoen at their word that easily so that means it still has to be one or the others.  Eitehr the PS3 is still taking losses or the Vita is taking losses.   I am more inclided to believe it's the Vita which is why they haven'tt cut the price yet.

That was some intersting information... thanks. It's definitely the Vita. The PS3's hardware sells at a profit and has done for some time now (source 1, 2), it's had great software sales and PS+/netflix whatever has also been bringing in the cash. Maybe I'm missing something obvious but I just can't see how it hasn't made them money over the last 2 years.

I think a year ago they attributed losses to the maintenance of PSN (server costs). PS+ and the net apps have probably helped make some of that back, but I wouldn't like to say if that's been enough.

If I read another article that says sony is doomed.......I wouldn't be a gamer if it weren't for sony.

Sony have Always been strong in the Home market with the Playstation and with the PS3 it went completely wrong in the first 2 years and they have STILL almost sold 70mil and even though the 360 was so much cheaper it still has almost sold the exact same amount.. and its been around a year less!
i don't think SONY will have that big a problem with the PS4 if they release it for around.. £289-£319.99.. any more and there will be a problem.. they have to launch with a big game and another big game coming within 2 months and so on..
It won't be that bad as all developers will flock to the new systems and provide a lot of software where with the Vita they went going to be there regardless.
