I was thinking about this and decided to see if anyone was writing anything offcially about desmond's part to play in the future Assassins Creed games. I came across this article, where Hutchinson makes a great point about Assassins Creed 3 almost being a new IP and that Desmonds role in it is what is keeping the understanding of this stagnant. It is understandable that they reworked the game from the ground up, but it is not a new IP. This is a franchise that is about to milk seven games off of the same franchise in one generation. The way they've treated the character of desmond is quite horrid, as he's played second fiddle to his ancestors not once, but in all of the games. Every bit of growth that Desmond gets is incremental and has not brought true life to his inner Assassin. From what Ubisoft has shown, Desmond is portrayed as a labrat on the brink of losing his sanity because the Assassins are losing an uphill battle to the Templars. Sure, we get to swing around with him once or twice, but compared to his ancestors, its like he's barely learned anything outside of Assassins Instinct and learning who he is over four games. It shouldn't take four games to learn that much, probably just two.

The only way we can prove what Demonds truly learned is by employing his skills and having him go on a journey in the present. If they think giving him a badass part in Assassins Creed 3 (im speculating on this part) is going to suffice, they've got another thing coming. This has got to be one of the worst useage of a main protagonist that I have ever seen in a story that was meant to expand, but is still centered dead on the protagonist himself. Desmond needs his own game and if he goes, thats when he bows out so another protagonist or subject can be located from infiltrating the Templars. He can't be playing second fiddle to his ancestors forever. If the Assassins Creed writers and directing team cannot properly redeem themselves for how they've dealt with this character, I agree that he cannot go on for very long, but not in the same capacity as Hutchinson who blames the character for being a fork in the road of the franchise rather than themselves. They spent so much time linking the franchise to desmond that they forgot about his character growth in the process and that is not exactly what I would call professional storytelling, but rather every game with his roles outside of Assassins Creed one and two are anticlimactic. I have the game on preorder and I hope this is not the end for Desmond, because so far they have not done right by the character.

Disclaimer: I still haven't finished Brotherhood and haven't played Revelations.

The problem I see with Ubisoft and Desmond is that they have given too much weight to his role in the AssassinsVSTemplars battle without using it, and now they can't go back.

I mean, he is (apparently) the only that has links to the assassins that have were involved with the "apples", and even at the end of AC2 that woman(alien?) at the ends talks to him as the only one who can stop the disaster that is about to happen.

So what Ubisoft has done is create a character that can't be used because if they do, the story will be closer to its end (the defeat of the Templars or at least stopping their masterplan) and they don't want to kill the franchise, but at the same time they can't get rid of him because of how they have written the story.

They have placed themselves in a bad position.

Very true, they have. Its just bad writing all around and lack of attention to detail even when the story was focused on Desmond. They could've fed a second Assassin into the team as well, which was just a waste.

bump

With Assassins Creed being such a popular franchise, it's sad to see that no one cares about poor Desmond.

By the way, after Assassins Creed 2, Jade Raymond left Ubisoft Montreal to take care of a new studio (Ubisoft Toronto) and Patrice Désilets, the other creator of the series also left Ubisoft before Brotherhood was launched.

So with the producer and designer no longer involved in the series (and who knows if the writers are still there). it's no surprise that Ubisoft doesn't know what to do with the Desmond.

They know they want him out of the way so they can milk the franchise. Ive been saying this for a bit now. Its the only reason to get desmond out of the way. There are many Assassins around the world in a losing battle, but Desmond was the only one who was destined to end it all.
